The switches seems to be the weak spot, if they don't seize they just don't come on. Pop it out with a fine screwdriver and unplug it. Replace it when you get a chance (scrap or new).

The way that sounds, it measures the ambient temperature when the bum-warmers are switched on and then heats by the right amount then switch off. Could explain the more random operation of mine!

Does the switch's "On" light remain lit at all times when the switch is in the "On" position whether or not the heater is actually heating? Mine does.

Yes Ian - it's a bit like the immersion heater switch at home, it might be on but it might have stopped heating because the water is hot enough.

Now the car is running I'm back to these niggles. There are 4 tiny clips which I cannot persuade to open up the switch, it is also hard soldered and not plug in. Wondering what my chances are of repairing this even if I manage to break it open. I can always wreck the clips and glue it back together, then solder it, and then find it still doesn't work...!

They have a few inches of wire and then a plug, unplug it and get it on the bench so you can try and open it properly

Ah I see, so I do have to take out the centre console to find said plug? Nothing visible, don't fancy my chances of plugging it back in even if I can pull it out

Have a look at the reply on your other thread, your switches are slightly different to mine but the same applies, you ease those "loops" up each side and then gently pull. You'll get the idea when you see the pics on the other thread.

No way to unplug without removing console, panels etc. How daft they hid the plug end yet you can pop the switch out. Would have made more sense for the plug to be at the switch end. Anyway we've fixed it in situ!

Nice work on fixing it

For future reference the centre console trim is very easy to remove.

Two torx screws in the middle, pull the ash tray out and the fuse cover, under the fuse cover is a little metal clip that holds the trim in place. Remove the clip and lift the trim out, it is easier if the handbrake is about 2/3rds on so it doesn't get caught on it.
