engine stalls when air con is on

this is the first car i have owned with air/con, and as i used the air/con for the first time,[yes summer is here] i noticed the engine stalled twice when pulling away from standing,so ihad to get used to giving a bit extra throttle, i know the engine revs drop as soon as you switch on the air/con due to extra load on the engine, so is it possible the tickover is low? or is it common with air/con.
what should the tickover be,[with air/con switched off] on a s40 1.6, so i can check if its correct by the tacho.

I think the tickover rpm should be around 750 / 800 rpm. My 2.0T's aircon is a bit clunky sometimes, and does cause the tickover to drag.

my 2.0t is 750/800 also and doesnt change much with aircon on/off

from a previous post, Mike Clift confirmed that if tickover was low and the aircon was on that you could get excess vibration through the steering wheel, do you suffer from this ?????

If the car is a later model and is still under warranty take it back to your dealer as there is a modification for this problem on the 1.6's. Earlier versions have an up-graded engine control unit and the later series need a later software up-grade.

many thanks to, graig v40,gorgeous george, and pc 654 for your replies, the tickover is only 400/450 and that is without the air con switched on.
i have booked it in to get this looked at by a very good established tuner of over 20 years experiance, it sounds to him like a fault on one of the components in the ecu management system.
i will let you know the outcome.

thanks to all who have replied to my quiery, the problem has now been resolved, by getting it fully checked over by a tuning expert, someone prior to me getting the car, had been trying to adjust the tickover by messing about with the throttle cable,thus sending a false message to the management system, no parts were needed, only the cost of the tune.

he is geof gair, of sunderland and has over 25 yrs experiance, highly recomended.
