Front wheelbearing cost
Hi,
Any ideas what it would cost to replace the front n/s wheel bearing? Been quoted £350 but think that's a bit steep! Thanks,

That does seem excessive but don't forget that a good quality bearing is not only expensive but absolutely essential as these are a big heavy car and a cheap bearing will not last.

It probably involves non-Volvo parts. As has been said, if you use cheap parts it will not last long.

well the garage will probably pay say £50 for a poor quality bearing ... why not buy the volvo one which costs 3 or 4 times that but will last many many years and let him fit that ?

Plus if you fit a Volvo one you may never have to pay again and know It will last. £260 from Volvo Parts Shop.

This. Careful with the brand. If you keep the car for only 2-3 years, buy yourself an SKF or FAG and stay there when they replace it (some mechanics are smart enough to still install their chinese brand and keep yours). If you keep the car for more years, go with genuine. SKF or FAG may make the genuine ones, but the ones they sell as aftermarket may not be the same standard. As for the repair itself, it can be done without removing the axle, I would say this shouldn't be more than 1h work for a garage with tools and a puller UNLESS the axle is stuck inside the bearing. https://youtu.be/27a5YvRtVms

Having made the mistake twice - DON'T allow a unknown brand part to be fitted, they're available from £40 or so on e-bay but typically don't make much past 10k miles and the shyster sellers never honor the warranty.
I'd much rather fit a second hand Volvo genuine bearing than a cheap pattern part. I have also fitted SKF in the past with good results.

I'm having suspected wheel bearing problems, Around town there is no problem or noise at all. At speeds of 50mph plus there is an intermittent noise, the faster i go the worse it is. It sounds like a wowing noise and appears to be coming from the nearside front. What's the best way to diagnose the bearing and rule out other driveline noises such as rear axle and 4 wheel drive system?
I've just priced up some bearings and can get FAG for around £80 each but i am in the trade. |
