Mainly on T5s (e.g. Dan F's and Alastair's cars) I guess because I'm assuming those account for the majority of the 19T conversions you've done. However, it would be nice to have some sort of comparison of T5s with stock injectors and those fitted with larger injectors that you've also worked on (all with ECU upgrades of course).

Since you've mentioned that there is still plenty of safety margin on say for example Dan F's car, I am just curious to know what that safety margin is. For my next upgrade, I will have to stretch the duty cycle higher and since you've got lots of experience with that aspect of tuning, I would like to what range of duty cycles would be considered 'safe' on these Volvo engines.

I have a 19T and custom remap thanks to VT. Ali drove it last weekend and I think he was pleasantly suprised (yes you can say so if you wish!?)

On the old fan she ran *with a slightly dodgy throttle body -> I/C pipe - 250 Bhp at the wheels/ 252ft/lbs. Torque is very flat between 230 and 252 - as is the power.

She has now been properly fettled (upgrading always shows up little weaknesses) - and the speed/acceleration is stunning.

As an auto the power is relentless. 2nd gear pulls 0.8bar @ 3000rpm rising to 1.0 - 1.1 by 5K+.

3rd pushes and holds 1.3 bar from about 3500 all the way to 6500 and then 4th is about the same. I tend - when driving hard to hold her in position 3 - which gives a huge speed range. It gets a bit naughty speed wise in 4th.

I LOVE THIS CAR! IT PROPER !@*&S OFF!

I also like Ali's, but I still feel that RICA is the way to go.

We have probably all seen posts in the last few months here and on other Volvo interest forums and otherwise heard of owners of cars who have not gone that extra mile when fitting larger turbos who bemoan the failure of their engines.

The failures are solely due to paying little attention to the other modifications and purchases needed to run at much higher outputs and of course to poor callibration in some software offerings.

Yes, you can get a sound and significant first torque and power improvement with little more than well written and developed software, but, with these particular engines you have to be prepared to undertake prudent extra modifications to ensure against costly engine failure when you really want the best results.

Glad to know you're enjoying the car Dave. I agree that custom maps are the way to go to get the best out of the car, especially when you've got other 'bits' fitted. How long did it collectively take to get yours mapped up to that kind of power? I spent an entire day on mine because it was mapped from scratch and I was shattered at the end of it, but it was well worth it! Do you know which type / size of injectors you have in your car and what their duty cycle is particularly when you're pushing 1.3bar? Since you've had some custom maps, I'm assuming this data must have been logged or monitored before the necessary changes. Hope you can make it for the July meet.

Ashok, do you think that on the road custom mapping is the way forward? I know that you spent hours on the road with Marco, and Jaqui did the same with her T4 - your car is now probably one of the fastest and most impressive 300bhp T4s in the UK :)

Although the question was directed to Ashok, the answer is that the way forward (and it's the way it's always been anyway) is to map a car on the dyno *AND* on the road.

There is a trade-off to be made between allowing sufficient headroom, and providing sufficient resolution for tuning. I'm no expert in the area, but I was speaking to a friend who most definitely is, and he downgraded his injectors to give himself better resolution at low rpms - ultimately to decrease spool time - but also to provide better off-boost drivability.

Huge injectors are all well and good (and for goodness sake make sure your injectors are big *enough*!), but it can get to the point where the car is horrific to drive off-boost.

In some circumstances, maybe that's a price worth paying. At Santa Pod (before modifications) I pulled away from a ~500bhp MR2 to the 60ft until it (eventually) hit (a lot of) boost, and went on to finish the quarter 5 seconds before me!

cheers

James

Firstly, Al, very impressive mate, a true sneaky car, never knew so much had been done/on the cards.

As for the on the road/dyno tuning.

Dynos are all well and good, and provide good efficient maps, but in my opinion on the road is the best way to do it. How many dynos do you get to check how a car behaves on a 4 sprint jaunt between 5 roundabouts etc, the sort of stuff you would do in the real world.

I have never had my car set up on the rollers, every bit of settign up has been done on the road with a wide band lambda up the tailpipe, its not even on after market management yet and still pulling silly performance out. beats RS4's, 0-107/108 mph in 13 and a half seconds, even using as crude a method as a wide band, a circuit to cap the MAP value at 14psi (to avoid boost cut), and FSE to adjust fuel rail pressure, we got a 12.5-12.8 AFR falling to 11.8 for last 500rpm as the boost dips 1psi. '

This was then tested in town for cruise fuelling, small blats and "quick" driving, and then full on blats down b-roads, and a top whack run up to 140+mph (obviously on private open roads lol)

Dynos simply cannot recreate these scenarios of partial throttle, on off, throttle balancing through fast corners etc, all the areas where the set up and delivery becomes paramount.

IMO, always on the road, test on the dynos for pub figs.

Sneaky? Well, perhaps. I was just keeping my mouth shut until the work was done! :-)

Thanks for the enthusiasm, guys!
