Default Instrument Panel not working after lockdown

D5 2002

After being stationary for about a week I came to start my car. The instruments ( speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge ) are now not reading at all, even after a 8 mile run. The seat belt lamp works and the oil lamp works for a few seconds after ignition switch on, as per normal, but all else is dead.

Just a few weeks ago I lost the odometer reading and the dreaded SBS AIR BAG WARNING light was on and I had lived with this for a few weeks before the latest total shut down today.
Has anybody any suggestions to make? e.g. Is it an on-board computer memory failure?

Thanks in anticipation.

We've had some pretty warm weather recently and heat has been known to play a part in DIM issues. I presume from your year you have the DIM without silver/chrome rings around the clocks? If so, there are known issues for that and similar model years. Later models, generally 2003 onward, DIMs are more reliable

I went out in the car this morning, covered half a mile at most, and when I got home I noticed that all the dials on the instrument panel were back working.
Still had the SRS AIRBAG warning though!
Loose connecting wire?

barrybritcher's suggestion is a good one in terms of the year of your car and the possible ingress of water - it is also possibly a dry joint in the DIM or a simple drop in battery voltage caused by the lack of use was responsible. Many of the odd readouts will be reset using the battery disconnect/reconnect cold reset method, but the SRS cannot be reset without using Vida & DiCe or a decent code reader like an Autel.

If after resetting the SRS warning reappears, then you need to check the various earth points, including the condition of the battery connections.

oragex (peppermint) has a video about where to check for the water ingress on his youtube channel

That won’t be water ingress, it will be dry solder joints on one of the chips on the back of the instrument panel. All cars upto around 2003 have had or will have this fault at some time.
Look up user spokulozic on this forum, he repairs them and has a quick turnaround. There’s a sticky thread in the traders section labelled ‘problem with DIM, ETM.... etc’. That’s the chap you need.
