Troubles
Hi,
First time poster here, Have a 1973 164e but it has been neglected. It was lying up for a while and then crashed. Problem i have now is the gearbox will only go in reverse, It is a new(ish) gearbox that worked fine in a pervious car, but when it was installed i got this problem. anyone have similar problems or maybe have an idea what it could be, Thanks for all your help. |

Hello and let me beat johnh in welcoming you to this exclusive forum!
Not much help yet, but my 164E has a floor-change 'box. If perchance yours is column-change, just perhaps the linkage is not connected the right way round, ie it seems you have 3 (or 4?) reverse gears and just one forward. It may sound daft but I initially connected mine up the wrong way round on my Austin Cambridge years ago. Will look at manuals when next back home. Assuming a manual 'box, I was also told by a well-known older Volvo engineer that the gear selector shaft on a LHD car gearbox is the opposite way round to RHD cars, so will look at that in my books too. Sorry can't do that now - not due back home (a computer-free zone) until Tuesday. Paul |

Hi, and welcome to the fold!!
It's an auto? And does the selector move into D, but nothing happens? Most likely candidate is the linkage/cable being out of adjustment to the box itself is not gotting into Drive. Jack up the back wheels and try disconnecting the selector cable underneath and, on the gearbox itsefl, select Drive. Can you describe the symptoms a bit more. Have you checked the fluid level? Low fluid can disrupt drive on some autoboxes. But don't overfill either, that causes foaming and damage. If fluid level is OK, still jacked up with the back wheels off the ground, wedge the throttle open slightly, then leave it running in reverse gear at 1500 - 2000 rpm for, say, 20 or 30 minutes, until the gearbox feels quite hot. Then try it in Drive. If there is a stuck valve, piston or servo in the gearbox, some heat in the fluid may free it off. John Last edited by john h; May 27th, 2010 at 18:45. |
