Default C30 Metallic Rattle

Hi Folks,

Our C30 has developed a metallic rattle when going over bumps, it's coming from the underside. I put it up on ramps and had a poke around and at first, I thought it was one of the heatshields, but after removing and re-attaching the noise is still there and the sound hasn't changed at all. I found some flakes of rust in the end of the tailpipe and wonder if it could be a corroding baffle that is starting to rattle?

Do any of you more experienced people have any more suggestions on how to diagnose the rattle or ideas on the usual culprits?

Thanks very much,

Josh

Does it sound like it's coming from the rear? When I first got my car I experienced a rattling, check http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=239183 and http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=249780

It was fixed by fitting OEM Volvo rear brake pads and applying the handbrake as per the manual (footbrake down when pulling up the handbrake).

I hope that helps.

I thought that I would update this thread to help anyone else who searches for this problem in the future. Firstly I would like to thank StatusRed for taking the time and effort to post the really helpful links, this is one of the things that make this forum great

Secondly He was spot on with his diagnosis, loose aftermarket rear pads which were quickly diagnosed by gently applying the handbrake whilst driving along a bumpy road (not too difficult with the state of our potholed roads).

New OEM pads and the rattle has gone.

Thanks again,

Josh

No problem mate, I thought it sounded exactly like what I experienced last year! Glad it's fixed!
