Default Vinyl wrap for wood dash veneer repair

As it happens I've a 1997 S90, but this question would be relevant to just about any make or model. The dash of my car features a wood-effect finish. The problem is that the car is 21 years old, and the wood-effect trim around the headlamp switch is cracked and chipped.

I've tried to track down a replacement dash section, but the only one I saw was over £20. That was from a car older than mine and so would presumably be very likely just as fragile.

A casual wander through the interweb has turned up sheets of vinyl wrap. It's as cheap as chips, and the photos published on the various sites I've seen really do look great.

Has anyone tried any sort of vinyl wrap material to re-do a wood-veneer dash repair? If so, have you any tips?

Thanks in advance

Jack
