"Engine System Service Required"

I took my 65 plate XC70 D5 into the main dealer for its 3rd service (only done 36k miles). On the way home, less than 10 miles from the garage the Engine System Service Required light came on and it lost all power. I limped home at 35MPH and got Volvo Assistance to take it back to garage this morning.

The garage says that the warning is no longer showing and there are no error codes logged. They have removed some oil as a precaution and are road testing it to see if it recurs. Should I be worried?

My guess is that they over-filled it with oil and that the "precaution" was them rectifying the problem they created, without actually admitting it. I wouldn't worry unless the warning comes on again. I recently picked up my V70 and it did exactly the same after a service except it didn't go into limp mode, the Volvo specialist I took it to drained a litre of oil out and it's been fine since. They told me that over-filling with oil can cause issues with the emission system and that's why you get the warning, it's a common problem that they were fully aware of.

I've never known an error occur that triggers limp home mode and a code not to be stored?

Ahh but yes but no but dealer covering their mistake . After all it was they read the car and declared no codes was it not.

We're it my car I would be looking for another dealer,
1 they were incompetent in filling the sump with oil,
2 they lied about their cockup.

Anyone can make a mistake, had they admitted it fair enough but covering it up smacks of a disdain for the customer whom pays their wages, today it was inconvenient, next time it could be expensive parts renewed. It's a Volvo, the parts will be expensive.

Volvo brought out a recall some time ago because of problems with fuel being pumped into the sump during a DPF regen. The fix was to lower the oil level and recode the ECU to not recognise this as a low oil level. A small sticker under the bonnet was put on to show the revised oil level post fix.

Problem is most workshops either don't know or have forgotten this so they fill to high mark on dipstick and clear any codes as part of the service and send you on your way. Oil level is checked by the car every 10- 15 minutes and if its too high it throws an fault code which is what you're seeing and why its a few minutes after you leave the dealers. They suck a bit of oil back out, clear the fault code and hey presto everything is fine again.

I've had this 3 or 4 times since the recall and its always due to workshop overfilling with oil.

Iv had this happen a few times after failed dpf regeneration means excess diesel ends up in the sump sending the oil level too high.

All I do is drain half a litre of oil out so the oil level is exactly half way between min and max marks on the dipstick. Keep on driving and eventually the warning light goes off by itself.
