Battery 2 years old good voltage , alternator checked. Going to put an ammeter and volt meter on tomorrow to check. Have ordered a new starter motor and see what that's like. Will compare readings too once new one is fitted. Do you know or anyone know can i remove fuse 23 (5A) engine control module to stop it from firing up? I want it to crank so i can get a good reading. |

on a petrol you just pull the injector fuse and or fuel pump fuse.

Thanks,
I can confirm if you remove fuse 23 in the engine bay (ecm) it will not start and will do no harm. Only problem with measuring the current draw is my ammeter is AC only ahhhhh... |

So removing the fuse and cranking does throw a heap load of codes.
Anyway, replaced the starter motor for a lucas one and it now fires like an Uzi. So glad i replaced it as found a potential nightmare. The + cable to starter was rubbing on the corner bolt of another component. It didn't damage the the cable insulation but wore through cable conduit. So might be worth checking yours. 20201027_140208.jpg |

[QUOTE=LucasSilver;2676565]Hey bro. Been busy with work for past week. I'm glad you sorted it. So it was the motor itself eh? Just curious if you checked the amps tho.[/QUOTE,
No, tried to but my new meter has not turned up yet. I would have been good to know amps old vs new. Thing is , it's been like this for 4 years. I took the old one off and it has no markings so i'm wandering if it was repaced at some point with an inferior make. Does anyone know if the volvo oem one has markings? |

Glad you resolved your issue, what i have found that will aid my starting is if I leave it till the pump has stopped whirring away, I think its about 15 seconds or so, so that tells me mines a fuel pressure issue, I am leaning towards an injector, could even be the one I'd already changed as the replacement did start up the tappet type noise

Update... it's been a while and maybe it was just hope but it still has an issue with long cranking when left for over 24 hrs.
I have been reading through all similar issues and have ruled out the obvious ones. I have yet to try and removing the aux belt to see if a/c comp is stiff etc. Should have done this when i did the cambelt I have vida, does anyone know the parameters on start up or sequence of events? I am in France currently so will start diagnosis Sunday. Could it be the crank sensor? |

Just been reading through this thread, first time. My XC has had a similar problem for a couple of years. Sometimes it really grinds and only just starts when it's cold, other times it's only a quick couple of turns and she's away. Problem exacerbated by standing. I've been blaming parasitic battery drain but I can't find any firm evidence of it. Sounds as if I need to check the earth leads for sure to eliminate them from the picture. Interesting.
