Do you mean it clunks when you put the gear selector into R or that it clunks as you begin to move off?

Hi.
You have only recently purchased this car , you say.
I assume you know little about it`s history and even less about the gearbox.
When whoever fitted this gearbox , did they flush out the old oil or just drain and refill ? Did they use the correct spec. oil ?
Before you do anything else change the oil even if it`s just peace of mind.
There are countless posts on this forum saying what to do and how to do it.

+1 on ensuring the correct fluid was used.
It's impossible to guess the course of events which preceded the sale. How many shortcuts were taken?, etc.

Give the engine's mounts a look too. I had a clunk into reverse once and the lower engine/transmission to frame mount was shot.

Also, do you put it into R and slam your foot down on the gas (so to speak)? Give the unit the full second to get into gear.

I recommend a "snake oil" to everyone and it's LubeGard in the red bottle. The stuff improved my shifting markedly. I've no connection with the company.

I tried the "snake oil" it helped slightly, then decided to fit an extra cooler, that worked well ,but now reverting back to its old ways , when cold and cool it's such a smooth shift , one thing I can mention is that when hot and I turn the steering slightly I get a little kick back then I know it will reverse without the massive thump . Suppose it is just something to live with ! No Volvo people around this way .

I've never owned a FWD car with an auto box[all mine have been/are RWD]but would imagine you can tell in the same way whether reverse[or forward] gear has been selected.Try putting it in R while standing on the footbrake and give it a few seconds,if there is no clunk then try moving off if it then clunks [in no particular order]whiplash in the differential, drive shafts, engine mounts and as an outside chance handbrake shoes delaminated.
