2007 rip
My beautiful Blackberry Pearl 07 has died after 11 yrs of ownership and 160k miles. Was driving along at 20mph chatting with the mrs, there was a bang, grating sound and the car just stopped dead opposite a busy junction of course...Took a look under the bonnet and could see the serpentine belt had snapped- AA recovery to local garage and was given the terminal news today. The belt had wrapped around the crank and killed the engine- no compression, dead. Annoying thing is the belts were changed approx 2 yrs ago and only 20k since then.... flew through MOT last week and 4 new tyres 2 weeks ago.... now just scrap value despite being immaculate. So sad

Have you thought about putting a new engine in it?

Could have been worse - mine (in the 850) gave way in the fast lane of the M1 with my two young children in the back.

SNAP!! [no pun intended]
mine done exactly the same on tuesday ....... i bought the vehicle oct 2018 and within 4 days of owning had the timing belt kit inc water pump and aux drive belt inc tensioner and idler fitted . used volvo timing belt kit & pump and a gates aux belt kit.. started looking into what went wrong with it yesterday . all of the parts fitted in 2018 were fine [apart from shredded aux belt] the culprit to blame for the aux drive belt failure was the crankshaft pulley separating and allowing the shredded section of aux belt to wrap around crank timing belt gear i,m going to re-time it today and see if it will start before i start pulling the cyl head off to see what needs repairing Last edited by hodge911; Oct 18th, 2020 at 10:12. |

Forgot to mention - it was only 1 month after my Volvo dealer fitted a new belt, and around 1000 miles.
I think everything had been overtightened (evidence - plastic belt cover worn through + they had to use a hammer drill/screwdriver to remove screws holding plastic top engine cover!). Dealer claimed the water pump had failed - nothing to do with them they said. £5000 to repair, but after correspondence with Volvo, I had to pay 10% of this.

Commiserations. Were there any warning signs at all? Anything I should be looking for to prevent this happening to me?

I. Had a very slight squeak on start up but only for a minute or so and I thought it was just a damp aux drive belt if I increased the revs by even just a couple of hundred it stopped immediately

No nothing whatsoever and the car has always been well maintained. Gutted as its been the family ride for 11 years and the only car my late daughter ever went in so sentimental value is beyond compare for me.
