I found these very reasonably priced and helpful.

Volvosaabbreakers.com

They supplied my replacement transfer box and latterly an engine for my XC90.

All fine for me.

Good luck

I just had a quick look on e-bay - 163 E3 engines start at £200!

185 E4's start at £400.

I've bought a S/H bare engine for £140 + £40delivery that I'm going to remove cylinder head send for a skim & de-coke and build onto my bottom end with new bolts , gaskets and belts

Hi, the issue with my old engine was a cracked head. It could have been repaired but was recommended not to skim by som eminent Volvo experts on this forum.

In to he event I purchased a complete engine which was fitted by my indie who confirmed that the replacement engine had new core plugs and crank seals (issue on 163 engines).

I personally would put more value on the labour and hassle and change the whole lump.

But I would be interested in how you get on..

It's a good opportunity to properly clean things out - the ports, inlet manifold, EGR and pipes etc. which can make a surprising difference on older engine.

Hi there is a place called deed swedserv I think it’s in Lancashire which is a distance but they can supply and fit a 2006-2010 engine with a new cambelt kit for around £1500 with a warranty.

I am looking at this option in the new year as my 2006 d5 has 189000 miles on it and it’s really tapping lately and it’s due it’s cambelt next year which is nearly a £500 job so I’m a third there.

As others have said if you like the car definitely get the engine changed as you won’t get a better car for £1500.

Thanks for all the replies guys, much appreciated. I am now thinking that either an engine rebuild or new lump is the way forward as I just can't let it go given how good the rest of the car is. Lancashire is a bit far as it would need recovering from Cardiff so any recommendations of good engine companies near South Wales please? TIA

Have you completed the rebuild yet?
