Top Engine Mount Movement
I seem to be getting a clunk on my 06 D5 generally when taking up drive at low speeds. After searching on here I though I'd check the top engine mount. I've got the new square mount but there seems to be quite a bit of free play in it, is this normal? There are also witness marks between the casting of the mount and the steel plate either side - again is this normal?
I'll try and get a picture tomorrow when it's daylight... Cheers! |

It's not really a mount in the conventional sense - more a restraint and free play is normal. The square ones look a better design and I would be surprised if it had worn out.

check the lower grearbox / torque mount
connects bottom of engine/gearbox to the sub-frame. You'll need to take off the engine under tray to get a look. If it's goosed it can lead to similar clunks on take up.

To check the lower torque rod. Just the 3 12mm bolts that secure the undertray need to be removed so that the tray can be lowered just enough to see the torque rod. Removed the 2 18mm nuts that secure the rod to the front cross member. Then you disconnect the rod at the front to check for any 'play'. There should be no play. There will be movement from the solid rubber bushes. My money is on the smaller bush being shot.
Should only take 15 mins, if it has failed you can have the new part in by the weekend. HTH

I agree it is likely to be the lower torque rod. Clunk on take-up disappeared after I change mine. It should be easy to see if the bushes are worn. Easy to replace, I think they are about £33 plus vat from Volvo dealer.

+1 to the two previous posts.
Just buy a genuine part. Don't bother with aftermarket stuff, quite often the rubber is poor quality and fails quicker than genuine. And DO NOT try polybushing it unless you want to lose your teeth. Been there, done that, regretted that

Well I took a couple of photos of the top mount tonight - its the passenger side that looks a bit odd:
As suggested I checked the lower mount - due to it getting dark I didn't remove it but I could twist the link from side to side reasonably easily by hand. I assume this means its shot? |

The upper mount in my V70 petrol has the same gap in the forward upper corner (fairly new square type). From your picture I don't see any difference in the fitment. I think the diesel and petrol models have different parts, but don't know what the difference is. But yours looks OK to me--I don't think that something is abnormal in your fitment. I see in the picture that there is no significant gap at the front of the lower or central rubber bar.

SourDiesel, The torque rod is shot. I had to jack uo the nearside of the car to allow me to get good leverage on the two bolts that hold the link to the gearbox.
