Default Stainless steel weld?

Hi

The car has stainless steel exhaust and recently the garage tried to patch a leak on the exhaust. I was told that if the repair failed I would need a stainless steel weld to do a proper job. The repair did not hold.

I believe that the garage will now try to convince me that stainless steel weld is more expensive than an normal weld.

I am I correct in thinking that welding a stainless exhaust would not cost more then welding a normal exhaust?

Thank you

Jamie

It is a bit specialist, different equipment needed. Should not be to much moreŁ

As Druid has said, it is specialist. Specialist means more skill, more expensive.

Stainless steel is a lot harder to weld than mild steel and I am not an expert on the ins and outs of it. A quick google search will tell you more than I could but You can weld stainless with a mig welder using a mild steel wire however apart from it not always working you then have a standard steel weld that will rust. You can also get stainless steel welding wire for a mig welder but you need change the type of gas you use and these will be more expensive than mild steel welding. You would also get better results using a TIG welder with a pure argon gas. Most garages tend not to bother with stainless or alloy welding jobs due to the need for specialist wires and gas.

What Kenny said is accurate. My buddy has mig gear and I was going to do my stainless with his stuff but the cost of the wire and gas made me opt to take it to a performance shop.

Look locally for a small engineering company who do fabrication work as they will have the right equipment to do the correct job, if you take the section off that you need I am sure they will do the work for a reasonable price as it will only take a short time to complete as long as they are not too busy of course.

As you live in Plymouth, there must be a few about doing marine work?

The stainless steel used on an exhaust system is low grade and easily welded with conventional mild steel welding rods/wire .. The key to a good weld is cleanliness however so if they are trying to weld corroded steel it is no wonder it is poor . It needs to be cleaned up to shining before welding .
