Arrow Inner CV joint boot clamp diameters

Getting some stuff for reassembling the inner CV joint that I pulled apart by accident while gathering all the tranquility and patience I have before the job.

I'm having trouble finding the ring clamp diameters for the boot. I have the car left elsewhere and have no way to check manually. Anyone happen to know them or know where they can be found? It's a 1999 V40 T4 MT (B4194T + M56).

Nice to use O/E bits but a big jubilee clip will do it to, however, i dont know offhand my self so i would end up getting 2? so i could fit extend it.....

That was my initial idea as I hate those damn OEM crimp clamps. But then I realized it might not be the best one, as a jubilee clip's weight distribution is worse than of the crimp type. It has a big screw on it's side, so theoretically it should vibrate when spinning. The difference is probably minuscule, but might become substantial at high speeds. I most certainly won't want to do this again, so let's just stick with crimp clamps this time only.

What I found is that there is a crapload of different CV axle configurations for different gearboxes, engines, years, chassis codes, etc. which definitely doesn't make the job easier. Some of the inner CV joints seem to be the tripod type, with 3 rollers instead of 6 balls. Good news is that there are universal extra long crimp clamps available (probably designed to be trimmed), I'll grab a couple of those in case I miss the size.

Anyone managed to crimp the annoying turd clamp without a special tool? Say, with carpenter pincers or something?

Could work as a temporary solution, but I'm looking for something more permanent.

If using a jubilee clip on a greased surface ( which can`t be helped) the clip will slip off as it did with my PCV on my Volvo T5.

I had to use the small supplied clip in the end to work as it is the same design as the one on your drive shaft boot.

Just trying to stop your grief......best to just simply use what is recommended.

It depends whether the clamps are galvanised or stainless steel. I have successfully crimped many galvanised ones with carpenters pincers. However stainless as Volvo use do need the special pliers. They are not expensive and well worth having in the tool box.

Strange, why is that? Both the worm gear jubilee and crimp clamps seem to work on the same principle, why would one slip off if both are tightened the same?

I would really like to avoid yet another use-once-in-a-lifetime tool, since I replace with reusable worm gear clamps whenever I can. Is it because the stainless ones are too slippery for bulky carpenter's pliers?

No, the reason is the stainless are a lot, lot stronger than galvanised. I have found it impossible to get enough force to crimp them. Even my son who said 'come out the way Dad, i'll show you how to do it' couldn't budge them. He is built like an England rugby player. You do need the correct pliers.

First of all when you tighten a jubilee clip it wants to turn the way you turn the screwdriver and when gripping on greased rubber it will twist and the clip will slip off.

When using the stnd. clip it is mainly just turned over with slight pressure to keep the rubber within the groove or shoulder on the joint so does not slip off due to less pressure.

The rubber gaiter does not need any real pressure as it can go nowhere it just has to seal.
