Default Boot Close and Lock button

Hi all, firstly thank you, I have read the forum for months before ordering and picking up my XC90. I am now two months and 3,000 miles in and all is running well.

One thing I cant seem to fathom out is the boot close and lock button and would like some help! Its very useful when it does work most of the time it beeps at me three times and does nothing.

My normal routine is:
1. Open and unlock boot using boot handle
2. Load dogs
3. Open & unlock driver door using handle
4. Drive to park
5. Open boot using remote release on the dash
6. Release the hounds (said in an evil Mr Burns voice)
7. Close boot with close and lock button
8. 80% of the time get beeped at three times and boot stays open.
9. Use normal close button and then get the key fob out to lock the car.

Any advice on what I am doing wrong or what I can change to enable the desired close and lock feature?

When you press the buttons on the tailgate take a step back out of the way of the tailgate, it is detecting that you are too close to it. Or press the button at arms length.

Mine has never failed to close & lock with the button no matter where I'm stood and I've never heard it beep. Such a high closing failure on yours suggests something isn't quite right.

You could try closing it with your foot instead. (By kicking under the bumper not the button...)

It will beep 3 times and not close if it cannot detect the key in proximity when you press the button. I've always had very consistent behaviour with this and never an issue. If it beeps at me, I can be 100% confident that the key is nowhere near the boot. It the key is about my person (in my trowser or coat pocket, in my hand etc) it will never beep and always close. If my wife has hold of the key and is stood a little further away then it might well beep.

Do you always have the key on you the 80% of the time that it beeps? If so, that would suggest your car is having trouble detecting the key in proximity at the rear of the vehicle.

Very useful thanks, I can undestand that the proximity sensor could be the variable here. I always keep the key in my trouser pocket and will pay attention to how close I stnad to the car when pressing the button. Thanks.

About once a month (maybe once every 5-6 weeks) my close and lock button refuses to work.

My key stays in my suit jacket pocket and it works most of the time. On the occasions that it doesn't work, it seems there's nothing I can do to make it work. I've tried taking the key out of my pocket, standing closer, further away etc. The problem seems to be linked to the "'kick" to open method too - whenever that doesn't work, the close and lock doesn't work either.

I've had similar problems - auto boot close, kicking open/close method and even normal door unlocking. It does seem to be a lack of recognition of the key about my person.

Would say I have this maybe 30% of time.

I'm starting to wonder if the battery in the key could be going - even though it's only a year - though is a key battery needed for these activities?

The only times my doors have failed to unlock was when my wife was holding the passenger door handle on the other side while I was touching mine to unlock the car. There was no beeping though.

My routine is

1. Open boot using foot - this also unlocks the car
2. Put dogs in, also using foot (only joking)
3. Drive to park.
4. Open boot with foot.
5 Get dogs out. Largest dog quivering with fear due to the huge jump down.
6. Shut boot with foot
7. Lock car with sensor on any door.
