Default winter tyres

does anyone here use or have a set of winter tyres and say steel wheels for their cars for when the weather turns nasty? I'm tempted to get a set of steels for my car and have some winter tyres fitted (I'm trying to tempt fate in that in won't be as bad as the last few years come end of January). however what will the benefits be if I did this. Plus as I have an 850R with std discs, can I use a set of 16's (instead of 17's)?

just to give more information, I was going to find a second hand set and fit them. The use I'll get will be a few thousand miles so figured it'll be fine if the used set are in a good condition.

if you want a cheap set of wheels for winter use, then the vauxhall omega rims bolt straight on no problem. later omega alloys are 16".

this way you can keep your volvo rims mint till next summer and vaux rims go for peanuts compared to volvo ones.

i use omega rims on rear on my race car (v70) as 15" tyres are cheap as chips but need 16" for front to clear brakes i think.

Keep an eye on E-bay as bargains can and do turn up, I bought a set of four winter rated tyres on 16" Volvo alloys earlier this year for £62 they will be getting fitted in around 5 or 6 weeks time just for the winter period - Mike
