Default 2.5T (T5) Engine Failure

Hi guys,

I own a Mk4 Mondeo 2.5T which has the T5 Volvo engine. When I was driving along the motorway to work this morning, white smoke started pouring out of the exhaust before the engine cut out. When I opened the bonnet, the radiator hose had came loose. After topping up the coolant and re-connecting the hose, it still wouldn't start so was towed away by the AA.

There isn't much information on this engine on the Mondeo forum so I wondered it anyone on here could suggest if this engine is known for failing. If so, what are the most common faults?

It seems like a major problem (head gasket or turbo failure possibly?) and unfortunately my warranty ran out recently. The car has done 50,000 miles.

Thanks for your help!

Generally the main problems with this engine are:

clutch (obviously not in your case)

Split cylinder liners (usually just on over tuned examples) but can happen with the regular one

what garage you taking it from?

Even if you have a massive engine failure you can pick up Focus ST engines for not a massive amount of cash off e-bay, and car scrappers etc...

Get a quote from a garage first, If you're close to Glasgow, try 'the-garage.co.uk' if you don't know where to go they are very good and honest.

Lots of white smoke is usually head gasket failure.

This isnt a volvo problem its a Ford installation problem . The engines are totaly reliable in volvos , cylinder blocks dont crack in the real world , but if you substanttialy tune the 300 bhp R models they can do so i have heard . But this issue isnt about the engine robustness it is about the Ford cooling system , Any engine will be wrecked if driven with a lack of coolant .
If the radiator hose became detatched the coolant would be gone in a matter of seconds , if you stopped as soon as you had seen the clouds of steam you might have got away with it , But i guess the head has warped and hence gasket failed .
The easiest option would be as described above a good used engine from a Focus ST or similar ..

It worried me in 2007 when i saw the Ford cheap quick release radiator hoses appear on the volvo V70 / S80 , my fears are now proven ... although there have been no similar cases yet on volvos ..
