The one which is more likely to fail is the one near the outlet of the particle filter under the car . It regularly gets up to 600C when regenerating it should never read more than that.
That makes more sense now because I was looking at the sensor next to the one I’ve changed and can’t find those listed anywhere,
Is the sensor after the dpf the same as the one at the manifold? Only asking because I can’t see any different types listed , not with the car now so can’t physically check

On my engine D5244 T14 the sensor underneath the car is bent and is numbered 31293032 and I think the other is straight. This maybe of help as I had to change the underneath one a few years back but I think it needs replacing again as I am experiencing problems with lack of power again.

Now finally having had the chance to get under the car with part in hand I was surprised to find there was no sensor after the dpf at all, after some digging around I found one on the top of the exhaust but it’s before the dpf and on the cat section,
Very confused now so literally no sensors on the dpf just the pressure pipes

Firstly thanks everyone for their advice 👍
After struggling to get the sensor out I could see, just before the dpf , I went to unplug it and realised it was actually the connector, the wire had broken flush where they join the actual block, unfortunately it’s on the car side rather than the sensor side 😡,
As I have a new sensor I decided to cut the plug from my old sensor and solder the wires from the car straight onto the sensor,
it works, hallelujah!! I’m actually shocked how well it pulls
Not sure how long the old sensor will last so now it’s time to try and find someone breaking a car so I can get that wire and plug for the car side
Thanks

Update on my exhaust temperature sensor. Although my car is xc60 it has similar engine to other Volvos. I replaced the original sensor at 36,000 mls (5 years) with one from Skandix and I have just replaced this one at 60,000 mls (7 years) with a Lucas one. When I had to replace the first one there wasnt much of a choice to purchase but now there is plenty of choice and now much cheaper. Hopefully I will get good service from the Lucas one and it has a 2 year warranty plus it fitted perfectly.

how much was it ? the volvo one was about £75..
I bought a general purpose Exhaust temperature gauge a year or two ago and the one in that kit cost over £100.

Total cost including delivery £51.14. There were other brands that were cheaper but I chose the Lucas brand as it is a long known brand and it had a 2 year warranty where as others only had 1 year.
