Had to reset a mate's S60 T5 last week as he had taken out the radio on his S60 T5 without disconnecting the battery. iCarsoft done the job which saved me pulling out Vida

lucky mine was booked in for service that weekend anyway so I persuaded them to do a reset for free. Then got VIDA later

Postman just arrived with 4 new wheel bolts so today I'm going to remove the unreliable locking wheel bolts before they cause untold mayhem

Hmm my locking wheel bolts look much worse than yours! I've been looking at this very recently, incidentally.

I have two kits of regular chromed wheel bolts on the way from Volvo (10x in each pack) as they're scruffy too, but the original McGard lockable bolts are no longer available - part no. 31373396 shows in VIDA, but has been superseded by the new-style bolts fitted to later cars. These are not described as being chrome-plated anywhere I've seen.

So I need to either:

1. Forget the lockers, as you have done, and fit the new shiny bolts all round.
2. Source a new set of McGard lockers which match the originals.
3. Fit the new kit from Volvo but they might not be as shiny.

Your post is making me think I'll go No. 1 to be honest.

My experience with locking lugs (bolts or nuts) on my sister's car and that of a neighbor, has led me to apply anti-seize to the threads.
I know this is sacrilege to many but if you reduce the torque with which you tighten your lugs, you'll be fine.
The wheels do not fall off your vehicle.

Also, if you bring your car anywhere for service, remove the locking lug beforehand.

Renewing your lockers probably helps a lot but I'd still employ anti-seize.

mine were supplied with 2 keys none of which fitted (or were damaged beyond use?) removed the old ones by hammering on a socket and wrenching them off

main thing is not to overtighten and damage the key, and don't let the tyre boys touch them with their jack hammers - I always get in quick with the bar and say no leave them alone I'll do it

@ilmiont: Depends whether you live in a high risk area, not much chance of alloy wheels being stolen now, crooks would rather target your catalytic convertor.

@ Georgeandkira: Correct procedure for tightening wheels is to
1. Nip all the bolts up
2. Torque all standard bolts to manufacturers recommended settings
3. Turn the torque wrench down a few Nm and tighten the lock bolt

There is no need or requirement for the lock nut to be as tight as the rest of the bolts

I've now cross-referenced the Volvo originals to McGard part 27000SL. These include the rotating steel ring around the head.

Booked the car in to my local air-con specialist today not knowing what the outcome would be as the car had been sitting unused in a garage for almost 10 years. The machine was hooked up and first protocol is removal of any gas already in the system. There was nothing extracted which meant all gas in the system had escaped which isn't a good sign, the machine then does a vacuum test which I expected it to fail and was surprised that it passed, a couple of minutes later fresh oil and gas recharged the engine was started with trepidation not knowing if the compressor would kick on. I was relieved when the mechanic told me it was all good and everything was working. Another job ticked off the list.
