My fathers T5 has this exact same problem and we are stumped too. Every now and again itll start and run fine but 19 out of 20 attempts itll just crank over. Every time we think we have solved it, itll drive fine and then do it again later on.
Symptoms: # Intermittent non-starting # When it starts it runs and drives perfectly fine with no codes # When it doesn’t start the automatic UP arrow on the dashboard flashes with ignition turned on # When it doesn’t start the Economy/Sport switch flashes with ignition turned on # When it doesn’t start there is No spark (we have fuel) # When it doesn’t start a cheapy code reader keeps flashing up Throttle position sensor What we have done: # Replaced crank sensor # Replaced cam sensor # Replaced throttle positon sensor # Replaced throttle body # Replaced spark plugs # Replaced coil pack # Replaced ignition leads # Replaced turbo vac lines # Tried a different MAF and tried it with the MAF disconnected # Tried the original engine ECU (currently running a T5R ECU which has been fine for the past 5 years) # checked and changed the relay behind front panel We are lost for ideas now. |

Its not the fuel pump relay. We have plenty of fuel but no fire. |

Have you checked to see if there is a live at the coil ? There should be a live when you turn the ign switch to position 2. This is one of the first things you should check if no spark from coil.

There is a black power stage on the ignition coil , you may have 12 volts going in but not switching the coil …since 1992 I have changed 2 on 850's … so pretty reliable but you never know ..

Have you checked the battery? I had similar issues which turned out to be the battery was on it's way out, days beyond the 5 year guarantee period......

Have you taken a spark plug out, then reconnected lead, grounded the thread on a convenient bit of the car's body and then checked for a visual spark?
If you have a spark, it is just possible that during the time for which it was off the road the oil seal in provided by the oil control piston rings has drained down. This results in a lack of compression and a failure to start - it is a common problem found in larger/older engines, particularly older Jaguars & other high end higher mileage cars. My own 850 was prone to this effect if I turned it off after less then two minutes running from cold. On one occasion I could only get the compression back by pouring about 50mls of engine oil into each pot via the spark plug holes...........I must admit it was a really smokey start-up, but it did start on the first if lengthy cranking after having repeatedly failed to start after being turned off after less than a minutes running.
