Default '99 phase 1, urgent (renault) gearbox problem!!

Hi all, my dad drove my car last night and said the gears seemed a bit odd, he couldnt find 1st or 2nd, it does play up sometimes, you end up with 1st instead of reverse occasionally and stuff, but i just thought he was being a bit melodramatic, but now it IS totally buggered.

3rd and 4th are where 1st and 2nd should be, 5th is where 3rd should be, 1st is where reverse is supposed to be, and due to the limited travel of the gear lever, it will not go over to the left enough, so i have no reverse and no 2nd either.

Im led to believe its a renault gearbox, does anyone know what i might be able to do to fix this?

Many thanks in advance.

Thanks Keiran, its gone and fixed itself now, my dad tried again for a few minutes going through the gears with the clutch down but the engine not running, i hopped in to try it again with it started and its back to normal again, weird weird car.

Clarkey if there's a chance the gear linkage hasn't been fixed before like Kieran said check it out before the gearbox gets damaged. Other thing unfortunately is that the gearbox synchos could be on there way...

Sounds like the nylon bushes on the end of the gear shift. Had the same problem and replacing them solve it, Simple enough job and cost about £10 for the bits from a volvo dealer.
