Default V70 D5 185 Clutch Replacement

My manual V70 D5 158 has clocked up 208k and the clutch (original) is starting to slip so as it is time for a clutch. The question is do I buy genuine Volvo parts or OEM.

Another post says the Volvo item is make by LUK, and there are lots of Borg & Beck listings on ebay. I realise Volvo didn't manufacture the assembly but they did set the specification for when it was new so I can't help thinking that as the original Volvo clutch has lasted over 200k miles and 16 years then that is the way to go.

There is a kit on ebay with Volvo branded parts that seems to have all the bits but I don't know if this is expensive or a bargain.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192380188...Bk9SR5qerM-JYQ

I am getting my local garage who I trust to do the work as research says it is too big a job for me. The car is structurally good and I like it so although a new clutch is a lot of money given the value of the car I can see many more miles in the car yet.

Has anybody any experience or advice? Thanks

BTW I am also having the timing belt done and will be using genuine Volvo parts for that.

OEM is the same place Volvo will be getting theirs branded from.

Be careful on the Bay that lot at ecp comes to a grand without the oil. There's no code on there right now for some strange reason.

What Stuart says below this post is true, always replace the flywheel if its a dmf one, good practice to do a smf as well but dmf's due to design have even more places to fail.

I don't know jack about this but I do remember reading someone talking about it and they were saying it's a false economy not to replace the flywheel at the same time (DMF?)

I would ask about that with someone who actually does know what they're talking about (i.e. not me) but definitely be aware of it before you get carried away booking anything

edit just realised that IS part of the kit you linked. fair dos

Replaced my clutch years ago, installed luk. Because it’s such a big job and takes a lot of labor hours, I changed the dmf also and lots of other things..

I had clutch troubles probably around 80k miles but was down to the slave cylinder leaking (a common problem, so yours has done well to get to 208k without the slave giving trouble) its quite a big job (drop subframe, gbox out) so worth using original parts, but volvo do use LUK clutches (confirmed as LUK marked on the old clutch) and their quality is superb, LUK also have a very helpful tech support and can ensure you get the right clutch kit, which you can easily source outside of the dealer network, what year is yours?, sounds like the euro4 (post 2005).

Ill post some info on the csc, which might be useful, generally when the gbox is out they should be able to tell if the dmf needs replacing usually yould hear some rattling as its essentially a 2 part flywheel with springs that take up some of the shock loading thats inherent in diesel engines, clutch on mine has done at least 70k miles and is still going strong, they have an internal wear adjustment mechanism that keeps the pedal movement the same throught its life, (well most of it i suspect..) like you i think its worth getting it right 1st time, and the D5 engines can do the miles if looked after..

The car is a Euro IV 185 bhp D5 registered late 2005. I have had it since 2008 and 28k so I know its history pretty well.

+1 on replacing the DMF.

Even if it looks ok now, it's done 208k miles so is on borrowed time. Would kick yourself if you didn't and it started to rattle a couple of months later.

As Thassos has said, the clutch slave cylinder is known to be a potential issue { mine failed at 60k when I had my S60 D5185 ) so I would strongly recommend having a new slave cylinder fitted at the same time.
It is located inside of the bellhousing so there is virtually the same amount of work involved in replacing the slave as replacing the entire clutch assembly ie gearbox out job.👍

Don't forget a new genuine aux belt and tensioner - more important than the cambelt on the 5cyl diesel. I'd also fit a new alternator freewheel pulley.
Be interested to know what labour you have to pay for the clutch change ?
