Absolutely agree that cheap often = nasty but not if it's a major brand - Esso, Mobil, Shell, Castrol etc etc. There are usually other factors at play. However, experience has taught me that expensive does not always equate to best, or even good.

I am sorry to have lost Chow, he brought up interesting points and I believe wrote form the heart. The fact I didn't agree with him is another matter.
For anyone who dosent realise ...I am the Amsoil importer. Consider my writting biased. Don't believe me and do do your own resarch on the web. Then place your orders...
As for dealers; these poor chaps are having one hell of a hard time. It is a fact that more auto service dealers are going to the wall than any other branch (twig) of the economy. If you seriously don't believe that any dealer would to survive offer something to clients that maximises his profits rather than provides the best quality at the best price I am wasting my time.
Having said that I know that I am not as I continually get orders from Volvo owners. Having said this I do wish you all a very merry christmas as its now show time and I may not have any time to reply on this forum until the new year (but I will try )

As for Mobil etc "dumping" old-spec oil onto Costco etc, (earlier post by Amsoil), I think there is a need to look more closely at what Costco etc are selling. It seldom has U.K. labels on the packs, sometimes not even an English translation, (which may not be legal from an H&S standpoint), and is generally purchased bulk somewhere in the world..........Costco are a global buyer. We've bought Coca-Cola from them in cans printed in Arabic. Whatever, if it conforms to your car's requirements for viscosity and performance and your choice of semi- or full-synthetic - AND is a major brand - where is the problem. As far as I know, Amsoil are neither base-oil refiners nor additive producers, (but I'm happy to be corrected), so they are just blenders. At least Esso/Mobil, Castrol/BP, Shell and Total produce their own base-oils and, of course, sell them into the wholesale market. Think I'll stay with Esso/Mobil or Castrol.
I'd have a lot more respect for a main dealer who said they wern't using the Volvo recommended oil. Then told me what they did use and gave me the option of having the recommended stuff at an extra cost. I think if you go to a Volvo main dealer you should be able to expect the Volvo recommended oil to be used. Where do you draw the line otherwise? Pattern parts because they are cheaper?

I have used 0/30 Amsoil from 2001 from 125k to 400k (Mobile 1 from 59k) with by pass filtration taking out dirt down to 1 micron (dirt kills engines).
Laboratory oil anaylsis has shown over fueling, antifreeze to oil contamination and just lately, a tappet riding on the back of the cam (no clearence) iron parts per million rising.
Got all the ideas from Volvo Technical.
Can't fault it. People are now asking will it go 500k...........Easy

Default Amsoil synthetic ATF

Just thought I'd add my tuppence worth

Most of my Volvos have been autos - by the nature of Volvos they've been high mileage, all over 100k. I decided to change the ATF on a 960 as the gear changes were getting a bit sluggish and the overall performance was dropping. I looked into the various alternatives and did some reading of the Brickboard - the Volvo Owners Forum of our American friends. After getting resounding positive feedback about Amsoil I bought some from the US and had it shipped over... It wasn't cheap!

The transformation was instant and obvious - it was more responsive, powerful and the economy was improved. To be honest, it had perhaps 160k miles up and I'm not sure whether it had ever been changed, so simply having fresh ATF would have improved matters, but every since I've only used Amsoil. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I know this sounds like a sponsored advert, but I assure you I'm just a happy customer

The above is a guide ; do check your owners manual.
Got this of american volvo forum I have read all the threads and the oil below is the one to use.

Benny,
Okay on your say so we submit, the fluid is synthetic.

Heresay and not correct at all. If you live in Clawson, then you work for Suburban Volvo. I can tell you that the part no. of the trans fluid was given to their service department by moi. They ALL said it's not synthetic, but shrugged their shoulders in explaining why it cost $18 a quart. Even the bottle from the Dealers doesn't say it's synthetic. Aisin Warner requires JWS 3309 oil spec fluid for that trans. And it's NOT a synthetic fluid.
What you say in no way shape or form trumps 3 forums who 99% say Mobil 3309 and Volvo trans fluid is one in the same. It's not special and it's not synthetic. No literature exists from Volvo or Mobil to say it's synthetic. None. It's an old wives tale to substantiate the inflated pricing from the Stealerships.

The forums is for education and learning. We have all learned it is Mobil 3309 and NOT synthetic.
Your comment "i have access to all volvo info and technical support" implies that you can find this information. Go ahead and find it then. Find me one shred of evidence that say the Volvo Fluid is synthetic and this has to come from Volvo. Or, rather, find me the source of the Volvo fluid and have them quote that's it's synthetic. You can't provide that. So how do you know so well that's it's synthetic? You absolutely do not know that. You only over heard it and repeated it like it was gospel...

Just a caution about USA claims that an oil is a synthetic, since the big oil companies won the court case they are alowed to label refined mineral oil as synthetic.

Oil sold in Europe must still be correctly identified though.
