removing valve springs
I am stumped as to how one removes the keeper/retainer from the stems of the valves. My sole experience in this area (one time, years ago, different motor) involved small keepers that were like a cone cut down the middle, kept in place by the spring. The Volvo B18 keepers appear to be different, and I can't figure out how they are kept in place or removed.
Once I've got the valve spring compressed, what then? If there is an article, thread, or youtube video I've managed to not find, a link would be most appreciated. |

Hello there , from memory , place cylinder head on a wooden / cardboard surface with a rag to pack the space below the valves . Get a deep socket to match the diameter of the valve collar & simply strike the socket with a hammer and the collets jump out from the valve stems , releasing the spring & cap
sometimes you cannot see the gap in the collets due to oil / gunk filling the gaps Hope it helps

Try just compressing the springs a bit further.Then the collets will come out easlely. A squirt of thinners will unstick them.https://www.google.com/search?client...spring+collets

I just removed all the valves from an Amazon head.
Place the head on a smooth surface ( wood is ideal) then place a small piece of wood under the valve, then using a socket over the spring hit the valve to break the seal on the collets, then use a proper valve tool to clamp the spring and remove the collets using a magnetic wand if they are tricky to flick out.. They are a bit tricky but it took me about 10 mins to remove them all.. |

Welcome to this forum! Please give specific condition, preconditions, and nature of issue in postings...it makes giving applicable and correct advice simpler... When in doubt, exploded assembly diagrams at GCP.se are often quite helpful, and will give the correct terminology...having said that, and without looking at it, I will generically describe the parts... Valves are indeed held in place by "split conical keepers" with ridges that grab grooves in the Valvestem, and which are secured in a mating cone in the "inverted hat" top valve seat, and the entire assembly is held in place by presence of VSpring extension force. If Cyl Head is off engine, a big "C" shaped valve spring comp tool as this ( https://www.toolplanet.com/product/8...RoCRU8QAvD_BwE ) can be used, comp the VSpring by squeezing from its wide foot to the top seat (tool has a split in this end which allows Valve with Keepers to protrude through, allowing you to remove Keepers, which allows the whole thing to separate when decompressing VSpring). If CHead is on engine, a different VSpring comp of this style ( https://www.grainger.com/product/45J...!g!82496523717! ) needs to be used. Be certain piston is near the top of travel to prevent dropping a valve into the cyl.
