Default XC90 B5 engine seems under powered

Anyone much experience with the XC90 MY20 B5 engine. I have an inscription pro one and when in dynamic mode from a standing start I’m getting 0-62 times of around 8.7-9 secs versus 7.5 claimed

I’ve come from a VW Touareg which was tuned at 300bhp and 680 NM of torque so it shifted when needed and the Volvo is just feeling a bit sluggish.

I know the iPhone with a couple of differing apps isn’t the most accurate way to test this but it’s definitely not close to the claimed.

Also, is it possible to get a Polestar tuned version of it or are there any plans. I’d just like a bit more low down initial pull. I was hoping the turbo being spooled by the electric motor would do that but I’m not feeling much.

Thanks

That sounds about right to me. I shouldn’t think there is anything wrong with it.

No turbo is being spooled by an electric motor.

Did you choose the dynamic mode in the test you did?
The difference is still significative from 7.4 to 9s from 0 to 62.
Polestar optimization is not available on the B5 engine I believe. Not sure about.

Wonder if Volvo did the 0-62 test using the manual mode of the automatic gearbox?

B5 Petrol or B5 Diesel ?

I drove both back to back when choosing mine, and found the Petrol seemed to start off faster and remained so up to 45mph, whilst the Diesel seemed slower to start off but quicker 20-60mph.

These are not fast cars so I would not worry. Personally I keep a much more powerful car for when I want that sort of thing and just enjoy the relaxed drive in my Volvo. My XC90 has air suspension which handles surprisingly well in the twisties when in the firm setting and has plenty of power for what it is.

At a guess they’re using launch control.

Take any car manufacturers figures with a pinch of salt, like the MPG figures, the 0 - 60 times will be at optomized performance levels and not what you are likely to get in real world use.

Hi thanks for the replies. I wasn’t aware of launch control so I’ll try it with that out of curiosity but I tend to drive the car in relaxed way anyway. The reason I raised it is because once this lockdown is over I hope to head across to the west coast of Ireland a few times a year. Overtaking is a regular occurrence on the roads and im worried the car just seems sluggish.

Is the turbo not being spooled up by the electric motor? I would think the engine is similar to the D5 except for electric motor and whilst their BHP and Torque are the same their official 0-62 times are different (B5 being faster).

It’s a pity there was no polestar option as I think it briefly boosts the power up by 20bhp when briefly required on the D5. That would be all I need as most of the time it’s gently moving around town at 30mpg

Incidentally anyone know what mpg cruising at 65/70mph on motorway this thing is likely to do. Haven’t gotten it onto a motorway with lockdown. Used to always bug me that I couldn’t get the Touareg above 37/38mpg

Thanks
