Default AWD outer gaiter replacement

Howdy Chaps

Hoping to get back on the gal this weekend. One of the last jobs is to replace the CV gaitor but I have not been able to find an easy to follow article anywhere

Anybody able to help please though I have to confess I have not really looked underneath to see what the task entails - having forgotten my MAP gun on numerous occasions and other tasks taking priority

I think it's easier to get one of those stretchy gaiters, otherwise it all needs to come to bits. It can go reasonably easy or horribly wrong and messy.

You will need a plastic cone that usually comes with the gaiters to get it on. This method is not easy, as it takes some stretching over but with a bit of patience is far simpler to do.

Using a cone and stretch boot it can be done without removing driveshaft, still have to remove it from the hub, though it's easier to take it off completely and hold it in a vice...if you have one.

Alernatively if you have a compressor, one of these -

treated myself to one last year, makes fitting very easy, especially inner boots

I've done both methods and have to say that using the cone was far easier for me. Yes you do have to release it from the hub, but you don't then have to try to prize it out of the gearbox with those snap rings that don't always snap out too easily and the possibility of pulling the inner universal joint out of its socket! Then there is the problem of trying to find the circlip and remove it once you have covered yourself in grease and everywhere else for that matter.

Fitting the boot is then easy, i will grant you that, but fitting the circlip back in can then be another nightmare in itself.

Thank you chaps to all who responded

Sadly I actuallyremembered the map gun for the very first time before trekking over to Saffy who is on my girlfriends drive, but then could not find it !!
So the garage will do it pre MOT

Have to say I favour only removing the hub / stretchy gaiter method. `if anybody has used a particular brand which fits and has lasted I should be obliged to hear from you. All in readiness for when the next one splits !
