Ideally you'd need to have the car raised on a four poster lift, with the suspension in its neutral state, then go around the various components with a pry bar.

I still think it's the NS steering rack bracket that has separated. If I were you I'd fit a couple of heavy duty cable ties or a small ratchet strap over the top of the steering rack and around the subframe so as to pull the rack against said bracket then test drive the car to see if the noise has gone.

Here's some pics of said bracket on my C70 taken from underneath and to the rear of the subframe. Just to the left of the pic is the NS inner tie rod and bellows.

Apologies for the quality of the photos but you can see in the first pic how it has separated. Most noticeable over a rough surface which sounded like a drop link gone bad and the occasional groan in a tight parking manoeuvre.

I may have been wrong about the rack being aluminium and it may very well take a weld as Steve stated earlier.

TRW is aluminium, SMI is a mix of steel and aluminium - if I recall correctly.

While my car was getting fixed for the rear axle issue they actually managed to find the original knocking I put it into the garage for was due to a broken strut top mount as suggested. I couldn't see this myself though, they only managed to see this being the problem when the weight was off the car on the ramp.
