Default V70 D2 starting issue

Hi all,

My wife foolishly allowed the tank to run dry today, experiencing the usual lurching before running out of fuel.

I returned home from work and after a trip to the petrol station, put 3 litres of diesel in, only for the engine to turn over, start but then die after 3 seconds or so. I repeated this process three times and still experience the same issue.

The car now has 9 litres of fuel in it, but will not run for longer than a few seconds.

I'm sure no one has been stupid enough to allow themselves into this situation in the first place, but does anyone have any suggestions about likely causes. My immediate reaction was to check the fuel pump fuse, which is fine.

I'm now leaning towards this being either a filter blockage or perhaps some air blocked in the system. My understanding is that the engine is supposed to be self bleeding, so perhaps this rules that out.

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Simon

It's a 2012 V70 D2. No engine codes I'm afraid, an yet to take it to the garage.

Make sure there is a decent quantity of fuel in the tank.

To eliminate air in the system, pull the connector in the picture and crank the engine until a steady stream of fuel comes out of the solid pipe you've just uncovered.
You might want to connect up some hose or have rags to catch the spillage.
Reconnect pipe.
