I tend to think that 4-5 years old with 155k on the clock isn't such a bad thing. Unless it was a taxi then I'd guess that most of its miles will have been A road/motorway, steady speeds, with the engine nice and hot.

I really wouldn't be that worried about the engine but would pay more attention to suspension components looking for any deterioration there.

I've not run Volvo's past 150k but my Skoda superb 2.5Tdi ran past 160k with no engine, clutch or gearbox problems at all. Exhaust was never changed. Battery was never replaced. Only think that went 'wrong' was a need to replace a ball joint & track rod end or two.

Similar story with a very old 1.8l petrol Passat estate that I ran past 190k. Again - engine & transmission fine - suspension work was the only thing needed.

Just my opinion.

Thumbs up My S80 Turns 150k

Thank you all for your posts and I just wanted to say that 3.5 years on my Volvo S80 2.0D SE (59 plate) has just turned over 150k miles and still runs sweet as a nut. Paintwork generally very very good. One or two small stone chips but glossy shine still there. Mechanically, sound and in very good condition. Continues to draw good coments from MOT stations and technicians. Cabin in very good condition save for one panel of the drivers seat that has cracked the faux techno leather.. Quote £60 to be replaced.

I love my motor it has served me well with only replacement tyres required purhased over the usual servicing costs.

Money well spent. Thank you all for your recommendations.
