Default Ticking noise from cold engine start......please help!

Hi

I have a V50 1.8 SE (2005) with approx 80k miles on the clock.

I bought the car from Volvo Wantage a year ago ( love her to bits) and it had a small amount of ticking coming from the fan belt area when I started the engine. It turned out that the belt had some grit stuck to it and was old and as such the dealer replaced the belt free of charge.

This winter the noise has become much worse.

When I start the car from cold (morning or evening), in mild or cold weather for the first 10-15 minutes the engine makes a really cheap tickerty ticking type noise. Sorry, I don't know how to better describe it. It does look to be coming from the fan belt.

Last year MRG in Chippenham told me (when it wasn't quite so bad) that this is a design fault with this particular model and moisture is allowed to get onto the fan belt.

Once the engine has warmed the noise completely goes away.

The speed of the ticking does increase with an increase in engine revs etc.

Please!!!!!.....is this normal for a V50? Or can I get it resolved. It sounds so cheap for such a great car.

Thanks everyone.

Tom

The was a recall a while back, about ticking tensioners on the pulley system at the front there.

Is that linked to the tooth\cam belt system or is that just linked to a fan belt?

Do you know if it is something that can be rectified without breaking the bank?

In my area here in Germany your not exactly spolt for choise with the amount of Volvo dealers. Nearest is in Jena and they seem to share with Ford.

Thanks

Tom

It is only the fanbelt... The 1.8 has a chain and you'll hear a loose chain

The good thing is, if you take your 1.8 to a Ford dealer, they'll help you better than a Volvo dealer, as the engine is a Ford motor and not from Volvo (directly).

I can recommend my dealership but have no idea about the dealerships in Jena...

Default Now resolved!

The ticking noise was the belt tensioner. Had a Ford part (tentioner kit) fitted incl new belt as the belt itself tends to catch a lot of small stones and grit....very quickly, also causing extra noise.

I believe the accessory belt tensioner has been updated to a modified tensioner and belt, parts around £60 from Volvo, don't know if it was subject of a recall though.

Well I contacted Volvo customer services about the tensioner and they maintain there isnt an issue despite an updated version being introduced .

£60 for the parts would be great!
