Can you localise it in the engine bay? Maybe louder on the drivers side? If yes, can be the pulley/tensioner for the auxhillary belt...

hi, what does the pulley drive ? and the ticking seems to be coming from top end of engine block not from side.

there is a known issue with the timing belt tensioner on 1.8 engines which drives the water pump.
Apparently it suffers from water ingress (I think).

There is a well known fix for the early 1.8 V50/S40 models and I think the parts cost about £140 from Volvo if you include the belt.

Fitting is of course extra ;-)

Search around and you'll hear the same comments :-)

Actually, it is basically both the 1.8 and 2.0l. It is the tensioner, which ticks when cold (mainly when cold). This is then replace by a rigid pulley and instead a certain type of belt is fitted...

Question Auxiliary belt tensioner replacement

Hi all.

I've started to get the ticking noise and sqeaky belts problem on my 2007 S40 1.8 SE petrol.

I have read through quite a few similar threads on this forum. The old tensioner seems to be the problem.

Does anyone have the Volvo part number for the replacement kit - or for the individual updated stretchy belt and rigid pulley? What is the cost of the parts?

Since this is a Duratec engine, I wonder if the Ford part is compatible?
I came across this "How To". Has anyone tried this on an S40/V50?
