Changing the Alternator ?
My alternator has gone on my 2.0d taking the battery along with it. I have stripped out the fuel filter and ready to slacken off the belt to get the alternator out.
Can anybody tell me how the tensioner pulley works? Thanks in advance. |

Long spanner to that hex shaped bolt head in the red circle and turn firmly either clockwise or counter-clockwise ... can't remember, you'll find out because while one direction will loosen the bolt, the opposite direction will lever the mechanism upwards releasing tension and thus enabling you to slip off the belt.

Thanks Guru. That pic looks like it's from the front and underneath, is the bumper off?

Yes, from underneath, and yes the bumper was off as I was sorting out other things as well at that time but I really don't recall whether it needed to be off to reach the tensioner, I guess not.
I ended up replacing the scuffed belt by approaching the tensioner bolt with a spanner with an extension from above through the engine bay, and had a friend slip the belt off the alternator... Tension is high btw, so you'll need to put some strength in to levering, it's not that easy to release... logically of course.

Cheers Guru, i was expecting the actual changing of the Alternator to be tricky with an auto tensioner but it was a lot lot easier than i could of hoped for.
Now i have a problem with an air lock in the fuel system, see here http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=58 |
