This has been bugging me for 2 years and ive come to conclusion to just live with it.
Every time I ask a garage to check it out they seem to replace something at vast expense and the noise is still there.
Only time it disappeared was when the EGR failed (also causing dstc warning). As soon as it was replaced, noise came back. No idea if the two are linked. Noise seems to come from centre area just in front of bulkhead.
Very frustraiting.

It's not a whimpering noise.

Remember, you're hearing the noise in quite a hushed environment, and it is hushed because the 70 is a pretty solid, well insulated bit of machinery. So, your sound sounds like a whimpering, but it's not a whimpering.

I know this because I had a noise - not a whimper, but a faint whistle like a small child might make when sleeping - that bugged me, and that the dealer said was really nothing to worry about. Fast forward a couple of months, the sun comes out, driving up the hill to home with the windows open, past a brick wall, and I hear a bloody banshee shriek! That was my faint whistle. Took it back to dealer, got a mechanic to come out with me, found a suitable hill in town hemmed in by high walls, dropped the windows and my right foot, and watched the mechanic's eyebrows disappear into his hairline. Cracked boost pipe.

So, your whimper is not a whimper, I'd lay money on it. Unless it's the sound of your wallet whimpering after reading that. (Sorry...)
