I am not sure which gearbox you have but if it is the 8-speed variant I would drive the car for a while before spending a lot of money upgrading your steering wheel.

I says this because I bought mine with the paddles and now barely use them, despite having them on a previous car and using them all the time. The reason they are more or less defunct is I found that it is very difficult to get any significant engine braking by changing down partly due to the close ratios on the gears, so you have to go down two or three gears to have much effect. Secondly for accelerating the automatic change down is pretty good and does a better job than me in most cases, again you often need to change down two gears to get a real kick. In addition if you really need a big burst of acceleration I just nudge the gear shift into "S" mode, hit the accelerator and that gives me more than enough zip!

Yes I agree, I've got the six speed auto in mine but have to agree the engine braking is minimal, and to be fare the I'd time I need and additional control of the gearbox it's no great hardship moving the selector over to sport.

think I've used mine about three times in the 4 months I've had it.
The first time was, of course, to see what happened.....

Fair point, mine is the 8 speed box,it's my 1st auto box and I am use to using my gearbox to slow down, just thought about downshifting with the paddles.

nice to have the paddles and play with them now and then.

this is my first automatic and I used to use the paddles just to check what gear she was in at specific times, but don't bother now as happy with the auto system.

yes you may miss the engine braking especially on twisty roads when driving fast, but that's what I use my mx5 for !!

my Volvo is just a comfortable cruiser.

Iain

ps you will never have the same driving satisfaction from an automatic as you will from a good manual.
