In-tank pump is far more likely to fail (from around 120,000) than the high pressure pump. One test of the tank pump, run the car low on diesel. If it stops with about 1/8th tank left it's duff.

Mine was intermittently faulty for ages so was a git to trace.

Most common fault on these is a neglected fuel filter.

Thanks for your reply. I've had the fuel filter done just last week and it's happened twice since.

I know for sure that the tank was less than 1/4 full last week but can't remember for sure if it was like that when it's happened in the past.

If the high pressure engine side pump was at fault, surely I would see some kind of symptom of that when running at motorway speeds and on acceleration?

It runs absolutely fine 99% of the time and never misses a beat on the motorway so I can't belive it's anything too horrendous/life ending.

Interesting that it took a while to trace the problem for you, that's exactly what I'm seeing now.

I've taken it to the local indie Volvo specialists who tell me it's 'probably' a problem on the mechanical side of the fuel system - i.e either the pipes, the intank pump or the fuel injection pump.

The electrical side and injectors themselves came up all fine on the computer - the error code reads 'fuel pressure low'.

There are a couple of posts about of people with the same problem on the same engine and vehicle but I just wanted to check whether anybody knew whether the fuel injection pump actually is the issue.

I say this as the garage says that they never have to replace either the fuel injection pump nor the intank pump which leaves me in a difficult position as something is definitely wrong but no one can tell me what it is!

Has anybody else had the same problem and found a fix?

Which is more likely - the intank pump or the fuel injection pump?

The car runs fine along the motorway and I really love it otherwise, but I can't rely on it at the moment and above all it has to be reliable.

Any help appreciated and thanks in advance.
welcome,
it may help if you started your own post, also did the indy retrive any codes from when you took it in.

On the negative side, how can a dealer quote £580 labour for a job that took me less than 2 hours reading from a Haynes manual????

Is there a RANT forum to air views on such things?
Youre paying for their coffee machine's, grotesque potted plants, glass and electric bills main stealers are always rip off merchants.
