That’s all great thanks guys.
I’ll be in touch with riverside to sort the timing once I’ve sorted the service/mot and belt changes. Just another thing I forgot to mention, there is what seems to be a noisy pulley...like a bearing has gone. Anyone experienced this? Thanks again |

That could be an idler or tensioner bearing. I wouldn't drive it untill you've checked out the belts and tensioners etc. as one of those collapsing could wipe out your engine.

Wise words from Huron.
With regard to the noise, there's a quick and easy check you can make which may help to pinpoint it. Remove the aux belt that drives the alternator and power steering pump but take careful note of how it's routed, so you can put it back again. Try starting the engine; it will run quite happily without the belt although obviously the battery won't be charging. If the noise has gone, it's something driven by the aux belt. Check the the alternator, power steering pump, aircon compressor pump, and the idler and tensioner pulleys for signs of roughness. If it turns out to be aux belt tensioner or idler, these consist of a bog-standard industrial bearing sandwiched between two shaped steel plates to form the pulley. They can be rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of replacing them although there are a few points to watch out for. If the noise is still there then it's something driven by the cambelt, most likely one of the toothed belt tensioners or idler or possibly the water pump. If it's still noisy then don't run the engine any more than you absolutely have to and it will need sorting as a matter of urgency. Hope this is of some help. Martin |

I'm not sure what the going rate for a belt change is these days. I think Riverside charged about £600 for the 160,000 mile service in 2009 which included the cambelt, injector pump belt and all the tensioners and idler replaced and the dynamic timing set.
Last time, out of necessity, I did it myself... should you be interested, my tale of woe can be found in some of my posts from late 2016 to mid 2017. Martin |

Great stuff, I’ve booked the car in for the full service and belt changes.
Also, for info, spoke to a guy called Chris from the local independent in Anlaby called Voltech regarding the pump timing and he was very familiar with this process and has all the necessary equipment to sort. They charge £45 + VAT for this service which I thought was a pretty decent price so will be booking in once the other work is complete. Itching to get it back on the road now Thanks yet again for all the knowledge, advice and tips |

This is most useful.
I didn't know about Voltech in Anlaby but their price for pump timing seems very fair. I've had a look at their website and I'm sure that Chris Hoggard, the proprieter, is ex-Riverside Volvo, Hull. Checking back though my service history, whilst at Riverside he did at least one MoT for me and has done other work on my car too. I'm sure he'll be familiar with these V70s. I'm pretty sure he also worked on a 440 and a V40 I used to have too. I'll be interested to hear how you get on. I have a couple of jobs I need to do which I don't really fancy so I might see what he can offer. Martin Last edited by Martin Cox; May 28th, 2019 at 20:42. Reason: Clarification |

So the car is in the garage getting new discs, pads, service, cam belt etc etc. The garage I use happens to be a couple of doors away from Voltech so we popped it down today and it looks almost certain that the excessive smoke is due to unburnt diesel and therefore the fuel pump timing is off.
For info if anyone is worried about this, the tell tale sign is excessive white smoke that stinks of fuel & irritates the eyes. The car runs fine and isn’t using any water or oil. Apparently very common when individuals or non Volvo specialists change belts for the timing to be off. The car is booked with Voltech on Thursday and will be heading for MOT on Friday. Will update once all the work is complete. Thanks again. |

Once you get all the above sorted......have a read up on adding 2 stroke mineral oil to your diesel at fill ups......these engines love it, better throttle response and added mpg.....my old one did.

Thanks for the advice. I’m already on with the two stroke method, tried it in an attempt to clear the fumes from the exhaust.
Unfortunately, despite my best attempts, my drive resembles a Cher video every time I start her up, hence the fuel pump timing diagnosis. I will, however, continue to use the two stroke after all the work is complete. One thing though, doesn’t this get very expensive? My mechanic couldn’t believe how straight, rot free and comfortable the car was when he picked it up this morning. It’s looking like I’ll get this A1 and on the road for sub 1k which in my eyes is just unbelievable value for money. On the road by weekend 🤞 |

I have owned my 850 TDI since 2008. I paid £1100 for it then. In the last ten years I don't believe I have spent any more than £1000 in bills for servicing and maintenance.
This year I decided to have a new trimming belt kit fitted and fitted a complete leather interior with wood effect dash and the dark grey trim. Had the wheels powder coated by my mate. I am hoping for a few more years out of it if I can. I love it more now than I ever had. I just hope I can keep it on the road. Typical the photos are upside down
