Hi AndyKent,
May I ask you how much you paid for the hub Please?
I think I should have to have one back up.

Water is a good thermal conductor as well so why would it not say to use that?

Water is runny and well, watery so it's difficult to control where it goes.
You'll end up cooling something that you don't want to cool.

Is it's runniness much worse than hot paraffin?

No it isn't but no one said to use paraffin.
Paraffin wax was the suggestion.

I think the hub was £216+VAT or thereabouts (plus some bolts which were a pound or two each)....

Not a bad idea to have a backup - the front hubs (at least for the 2004 models) fit either side - but I have no idea if the same hubs also fit the rear (I doubt it)....

Yep, WAX.

The idea is to have something that _conducts_ heat well and can be localised to the axle.

Ice could be solid (as wax) but I doubt ice would conduct heat away from the axle very well as much as blind you with steam and/or explode.... of course, I'm only _presuming_ that paraffin wax wouldn't do that.

Holy cow!
Get to http://m.autodoc.co.uk where you'll pick up a big name, high quality bearing/hub assembly for less than £100.

Definitely true.

However, as a total amateur, the only big (i.e., trustworthy) name I know is 'Volvo'.

And, will those online guys supply the correct stretch bolts and an axle bolt (that I didn't even know I might need) without my asking for them (and offer to take them back for refund if it turns out I don't need them)? And will I need to double check the part numbers and even then potentially end up with the wrong part sitting in my lap whilst I wreck the old hub to get it off...?

Given my lack of experience/knowledge, it feels well worth the premium. Plus, there have been quite a few reports of 'non-volvo' bearings failing in short order....
