I can’t remember of the top of my head but make sure the filler plug comes out before undoing the drain plug.

On a 1031 axle, the drain plug is the lowest bolt on the diff cover, and the fill plug is on the diff cover too!

More than likely, 1030 afaik were mainly found on 240's and early 740's.

If the diff has never been drained before, removing said bolt might not allow oil through. There is a virgin 'gasket' that needs poking for the smelly stuff to leak out.

Personally, if that happens with me, I'd see a doctor...

Taking it for a drive first will warm the oil to make it easier to drain Mark, let us know how you get on?

It's a job i keep putting off on mine, i've had the oil (plus an additive to quieten the grumbly diff i hope) for quite a while now.

Maybe when i fit the rear ARB i'll drain the oil at the same time................

To throw a spanner in the works[no pun intended] according to Haynes the diff has no drain plug, just a fill/level plug which is on the rear of the diff casing.

Every pun intended surely?

Are you reading the bit about the IRS differential? Just had a look through my HBoF (albeit for the 7xx) and the IRS diff doesn't appear to have a filler or level plug, can't find any reference to it in the text either.

However, in the section about the live rear axle, it does refer to the level plug and i'm sure i've seen a reference to the drain plug too.
