Locating MAF and EGR
Hi,
I'm new to cars and just bought my first car. It's a left hand drive 1998 Volvo V40 1.8L petrol. Engine is a bit sluggish so I thought it would maybe help if I cleaned the MAF sensor and EGR system but I couldn't locate them. Here are pictures from my air intake. https://ibb.co/rf9G4Q7 https://ibb.co/gWYCWP2 I think somebody already took the EGR system out. Here are pictures of my exhaust manifold. https://ibb.co/CstzMfX https://ibb.co/TwCNw9G Also, there is a hole in my air box. I wonder what it's for. https://ibb.co/PYMCcTm |

I'm assuming that is the 1.8 volvo engine & not the GDI ?
So therefore the MAF is attached to the top of the air filter box & has a large diameter pipe going to the engine, it also has a mutiplug attached to it . The MAF is quite delicate inside, so be careful not to damage it ! There is no EGR on this engine. The missing part on the exhaust manifold is just a warm air pipe that goes to the bottom of the air filter box. It's usually a flexible aluminium pipe, & it's mean't to help the car drive a bit better when the engine is cold. It's not really all that important & you probably won't notice much difference whether it's fitted or not ? |

Yeah, it's a non GDI. I definitely don't have MAF where you described it should be. I have looked at photos of other V/S40s and I don't have the MAF there where it usually is. Maybe I'm missing the MAF but how does the engine even work then? I found a video showing the same engine that I have: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO053K4mBd4

It's possible that older models may not have a MAF sensor, but use a MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure) instead ?

This is most likely, as I don't recall my phase 1 2.0 having a MAF.
