Which brake discs and pads?
Hi!
I am about to replace my old el cheapo Bosch discs and pads along with the brake lines (?), rebuild calipers and change the brake fluid. I checked the prices of OEM parts, but I am unable to cope with them financially. I am oscillating between Jurid and Ate disks and pads. There is a price difference, but if the difference in quality is significant I won't be reluctant to pay the higher price for the Ate parts. My old Bosch discs were fitted 3 years ago (apr. 48.000 miles or 78.000 kms) and now are giving me an annoying judder. Time to replace them, since in a couple of weeks I'll be doing a trip to Italy (apr. 2500 miles) with wife and two kids. So... what would you choose if you were walking in my shoes (money IS an issue, and I am willing to keep the car for long)? Thanks for reading.

Brembo available from https://www.autodoc.co.uk they are a German company that trade under a number of names. Their call centre will call you to confirm all your order and payment details before they send it out. Put me off a bit at first as it seemed a bit strange but they are who they say they are and prices are very good.

Hi ATE is the Volvos fitted parts, I have Volvo front pads to fit, in a Volvo box,
made by ate on the pads, brake callipers are also made by ate, look on ebay you can get some good deals from Volvo dealers on ebay, I got the front pads nearly 1/2 price delivered, Dave also if you change the front calliper holders the same pads, you can fit 305mm discs, I fitted Delphi (been around for years and years) discs 3 years ago very good and cheap from ebay sellers, Dave Last edited by davebb; May 8th, 2019 at 20:44. |

Thanks for all the replies. I forgot to mention I have 305 mm front discs fitted at the factory.
OEM parts are a bit pricey: front (145 + 33 delivery )and rear (109 GBP + 33 delivery to Romania)

Ate.
Not heard a bad word and they make the oe discs/pads. Brembo seem to have plummeted in quality of late, stay away aling with mintex. TRW, Textar are both really good. |

Brembo used to be THE aftermarket brakes to have, Ive fitted enough in my time both commercially and personally.
My last set however (and yes they are genuine) appeared to be less well made, and, have worn quickly and inconsistently. During this period I have read a lot of people saying the same/similar to my own experience. As such, I have had to come to terms with the fact that the std pattern part brembo are now just that, pattern-part. No better than random stuff off ebay. They havent distorted though to be fair, unlike modern mintex's favourite party piece. Its so sad that these companies have 'sold-out', licensed out the name, or been bought out and 're-aligned'. From past experience, I would now buy Apec over Brembo and Mintex, as the discs are of higher quality. |

Shame to hear Mintex getting a bad reputation.
I fitted fronts about five years or 70k miles ago and rears shortly after and they are fine. You would wonder are they real Mintex going about or counterfeit. |

p'gid
Pagid are also good quality and have used their discs, pads with no issues, so far 😁
As others have said manufacturers tweaking the product over time, sometimes for cost reasons is not a great trend .. consistency is key 🤔, as brendan points out counterfeit products must cause established manufacturers a big headache as they'll be out there destroying their reputation. |
