I think you have to loosen the 4 top bolts and tap in a certain direction....

These pumps are def NOT bullet proof lol

I've just done this job, took around 3 hours start to finish, that said I had an idea of what I was doing as I removed pump and injectors from a breaker the night before and access was much easier to find bolts and get at them!

Top Tip #EddChina - While the pump is off mark the timing marks clearly, this will make it much easier to time when refitting. Once fitted set the engine to TDC using the flywheel mark, turn the pump counter clock past the timing mark by approx 1 tooth until you feel the load on the pump, set the adjusters, tighten the cam pulley and refit the spacer washer to the locking bolt. Engine should fire easily.

The reality is it probably won't happen again in the future, ending up in deficit of parts and time along with being left out of pocket leaves a slightly bitter taste.

I've never met PNuT but his advice, garnered from this forum, has been invaluable to me.
Thanks PNuT!

I gunked my piston rings by running bio oil on and off for about 5 years.

New rings aren't a lot (get Kolbenschmidt, they are factory original), but its the entire engine disassembly that is the PITA!

Nearly 300k on the engine and the mains and rod plain bearings were all very tidy, had measurable wear, but my neighbour (former Sulzer diesels fitter) took a look and said 'just put them back in, their fine'. New plain bearings, rings, gaskets all round, valves and valve guides fitted and reamed to perfect size. Works great now, zero smoke and keeps its engine oil a lot cleaner.

Those bosch VP pumps are climbing in value and getting harder to find, as there are less V70 to get scrapped these days, and the VW van guys are often there first. The volvo fitted units have an 11mm pump head (12mm is possible to fit but requires modification) which is very desirable to anyone looking for power.

quick look on the local moterfactors and there are about £350 thats with a £100 trade in for the old one, will see if the local Marine diesel place will recon it for me if its worth doing so.

so what i want to know is if getting the pump out is hard work and are they prone to giving up?

PS: I did find a brand new one at £1500....... didnt know they still made them lol
