Alarm Siren??
Hi,
The alarm LED on the dashboard of my 1999MY S70 T5 has started to flash for about 15 seconds when the ignition is switched on.Having searched the forum I think the likely fault is the battery in the siren?? The remote locking seems to be working ok. If I find the batteries have leaked and damaged the circuit board can I use the car without the siren - until I source a replacement? Also, if I need a replacement which other models have the same alarm fitted? Any advice welcome! Andrew. |

I have a '97 V70:~ probably similar to yours?
Siren box located behind the drivers side wheel arch liner- front section. I did a brief write up on this to include the batteries etc. The siren is disconnected on this car (ie batteries not replaced) without any problems to anything else- central locking works- indicator lights work when locking & flash if any error has occurred etc. Personally I wouldn't bother to do a repair for the sake of trying to annoy the population! who just ignore them anyway! The car is fine without it if you wish. Good luck Bob. Last edited by Bob Meadows; Nov 7th, 2020 at 10:21. |

Just unplug the siren, means removing the wheel arch liner, but everything else will work ok, except of course no siren, lights will flash though...so if someone breaks into it...
New sirens are available but at around £100+ S/hand...you'll be very lucky |

Thanks for the replies. It's good to know the siren isn't essential!
Bob, could you post a link to your write up as I couldn't find it? I'll take the siren out and see if I can repair it - or possibly replace it if I can get a replacement at a reasonable price. Thanks again, Andrew. |

In addition to the siren, you can have the alarm horn in the engine compartment. My 1998 S70 just came with the horn on the cowl panel. You can choose one or the other with a VST, but ... I'm sure you can live without a siren or a horn and the VGLA works without them! Last edited by DragosGD; Nov 8th, 2020 at 04:16. |

Andrew some details:~
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=301740 https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...ighlight=alarm '97 V70, remove the front wheel-drivers side, pull back the lower front edge of the liner and you should see the alarm just in front of washer bottle. It may have one of those captive round headed bolts so either grind in a slot or grind off & replace the same - you can then remove alarm/holding bracket. Hope it helps Regards Bob. |

Hi,
Thanks for that guys. Now you've got me (slightly) worried DragosGD! I know I should check the fault codes before removing the siren - any recommendations on what code reader I should use? The cruise control has a!so stopped works so it time for me to get a fault code reader. Thanks for the links Bob - very helpful! Andrew. |

Unfortunately, only a Volvo Scan Tool (Autodiagnos-Multi Tester Pro) with a special PIN number can read these codes. The device is quite rare and expensive, but sometimes they appear on ebay.co.uk In the past an independent VOLVO service (not a dealer!!) read my codes for free, maybe you have such a service in your area!
You need the PIN codes - related to your VIN number. So, you go here and create a Help Request (under Support tab) with your VIN number asking for ALL your vehicle PIN codes. They will send you the codes on file at time of build! (Radio PIN#, Key Code, Programing Alarm PIN# , Trip Computer PIN#, etc) I know, it's not simple but if you want to keep the car it's worth it! You don't have to worry about the alarm. Best, Dragos |

Isn't this just for retailers/service techs ?

Few years back I created an account to buy some publications and this year I asked for the codes and they gave them to me, No questions asked! Since I bought the technical publications, I guess they know that I'm not a retailers/service tech!
At the same time you can ask for these codes at VOLVO Car USA Support, NOT at dealers! By the way ... I see that now VOLVO offers "Complimentary Diagnostics" ....Available at your participating Volvo dealer. Best, Dragos. Last edited by DragosGD; Nov 9th, 2020 at 15:38. |
