V70 Drive Problem
My parents have a 2008 '57 plate V70 D5, they have it to tow their caravan.
It has always performed well towing the caravan; but today, they were towing it to their usual pitch up a hill and the car wouldn't pull it, dad tried three times, and managed to get half way up and then it suddenly went bang and wouldn't move forward at all, but it will go backwards. Luckily they have some friends who live nearby and they have towed the caravan to their pitch up the hill. Does anyone have any idea what could have happened for the car to suddenly not pull up the hill (the rest of the journey it pulled fine, just the last bit on the camp site)? Could it be the gearbox that has gone? It seems strange it won't go forwards but will reverse. Anyone have any other ideas as to what the problem could be? Thanks Caroline |

Sounds like the transmission - manual or auto?

Any odd noises prior to this?
Clicking or knocking in idle that disappeared whenever the clutch was pressed? How many miles has it done? |

No, no odd noises before it went, just struggled to get up the hill, then went bang.
It's done about 120,000 miles. |

What do you mean by "struggled"? No power? Clutch slipping? Would not engage correct gear?

No power to pull up the hill.
It was fine driving to the camp site, hills and all, it was just the last bit up the grassy hill to the pitch, suddenly no power. There was no warning - no lights on dashboard, no noises. Dad tried to get up the hill by putting his foot down to try and get more power, it crept forwards a bit then stopped, he did this three times and managed to get half way up, then when he put his foot down for the fourth time, it went bang (literally) and stopped completely. It now won't go forwards, in any forward gear; but it will go in reverse. |

have you checked the hose into the turbo. This is a large black hose in the middle of the engine. It sounds like a problem I had once when towing and scared the crap out of me with the bang which was just the pressure being released. Usually the jubilee clip that fails or could be the hose has gone soft and needs replacing. Hope it helps.

The fact that it went bang and now does not move forward in any gear would seem to indicate one of the cogs/synchromesh or the shaft it runs on has snapped. If it was a clutch or input shaft problem the it would not work in reverse either. If it was a turbo problem then the lack of power would also affect reverse I would have thought.

Thanks Guys for your replies.
Dad rang tonight and has told me the car is driving fine now. He's not sure what happened, but he thinks the car was jumping out of gear when he was putting on more power. That was the bang he heard. Why it was finding the hill difficult, we still don't know; when it has pulled the caravan up it before. Once the caravan was disconnected, he drove it around for a bit and everything seemed fine (his friends followed behind just in case). all forward gears were working as they should and the reverse. Why it wouldn't go forward for a while is a mystery. Hopefully the £££££'s they were fearing have been put on a back burner. |
