Hi, I think the IRS went on estate cars with the upgraded more aerodynamic front panels around end of '95. Just look under car and see if solid axle is fitted. If there are coil springs, it is solid axle as the IRS had a composite transverse spring. I don't believe Heavy Duty Transverse springs are available.

but the car is 250/300 miles away just thinking of buying it and i would want to lower it as well as stiffen it - it is an estate the owner is non technical did not know what sort of engine was under the bonnet not even 8V or 16V - i have suggested he takes it along to his local garage and asks the mechanic to have a look see he he

thanks

All 740s and all 940s had the solid rear axle. None of them has IRS.

This is wrong. The IRS fitted to the 760s and 960s saloons between 1988 and 1994 had coil springs too. From 1995 onwards, they used the leaf thing at the back and an 850 type front end. Prior to 1988, the 760s had same as the 740s but up until 1994, all estates, 740/760/940 and 960 had a solid rear axle.

Hi, George, I know that Saloons of earlier cars had coil springs, but did not mention this as it would confuse things. The thread query refered to a 1995 Estate and my reply was specifically in relation to this car.
