Default Abs Controller

OK, I've been having intermittent problems with my Abs switching off. Symptoms seemed to point to possible dry joints in the Abs controller. So this weekend I decided to remove it and open it up to try and resolder the connector pins. All was going fine until I tried to open up the controller. Very difficult but I persevered in the knowledge that I could re-seal and re-glue the plastic casing back together. Soldered up the pins OK and then noticed trouble.

In my bungling attempt to open the controller box I have damaged the circuit board, specifically I have knocked one of the surface mount resistors off the board. This is now far beyond my ability to fix so it looks like I need a new controller.

So my questions :

I need a new controller, does the car's software need to be updated/changed to work with the new controller ? Can I just get a replacement and put it in position or is it more complicated than this ?

The Volvo parts guy I spoke to said that it 'probably' needed a software update but wasn't particularly helpful.

I have a 2000 year (new shape) V70 T5, auto with STC.

Thanks,
Tim.

hi tim.....sorry to hear of your misfortune...
im sorry to say that you are correct, in that if you replace the abs ecu you are likely to need to have the new ecu "regonised" at a volvo main dealer....
separately, would you do me a favour.... i am in the process of doing a how to do on the repairs of these ecu,s however the photos i took when i did mine have mysteriously diappeared from my pc....would you take some pics for me and either email to jod.jod@talk21.com or post them here for me...this will be much appreciated by many forum members
many thanks
cheers

OK, I'll take some pics tonight and email them to you.

I've spoken to BBA Reman and they'll have a go at fixing it otherwise they'll accept it as an exchange.

I'm surprised they'll take back an ECU that has been worked on as they will then be potentially liable for any accident that has been caused by mis-functioning of the unit.
