The very definition of a truly sh1te day

Only some of the missing bits which broke up have been found. God only knows where they are, so it's def not worth trying to rebuild it with my luck. To do so would be the very definition of stupid.

So, some 'Tub Boat sound' lessons for all D5 owners.
- If you get that sound, you are up for some serious spend.
- Get it done FAST.
- Ignore the well meaning but incorrect advice re leaving it.
- If you catch it soon enough it's recoverable, if you leave it it's a new engine...

Speaking of which. can anyone point me in the direction of a trustworthy source of said engines? Pretty please as my budget has become a shoe string

Thats realy unfortunate! hope you can get a cheap good replacement engine
With already replaced lifters!
Maybe a beforehand endoscope inspection under the rockcover is worthwhile for others.

Sorry to hear this, it is gutting especially when you’ve done so much work on it I’ve seen a few engines on eBay but I found a specialist had one in a damaged xc90 so it is currently being fitted.

Hopefully get it back next week and hope you get yours sorted too and not to expensive either I mirror your advice to anyone who starts to get the tugboat noise or tapping to get it done sooner rather than later.

Let us know how you get on I’ll update once I get it back.

Daniel

Just another note I did hear that some d5 engines around our year did have soft lifters fitted so they didn’t last like others, I’m guessing ours were one of them, but not sure if it was true or not or we were unlucky.

But I’d maybe try and find a newer engine just in case, mine is coming out of a 10 plate but I would have looked after 2007 engine hope it helps.

I've, obvs, seen the same rumour Dan. Whichever year it is, I'm going to have the following done in order to head off known issues for as long as possible cos it'll never pay me back and I could not stitch anyone up. Anyway, the list is:

- lifters & rocker arms replaced
- a new swirl flap actuator arm (also modifying it so the darn thing can't break)
- cam belt
- aux belt
- breather pipe that goes over the engine with the internal waterway
- whole exhaust gas recirc (EGR, hoses & monifold etc) cleaned out

For all this money being spent it's cheaper to do it when it's out than in. God only knows how I'll pay for it. See myself standing on street corners of an evening for the next two hundred years. Hope they don't want refunds for poor performance

Still can't find it in my heart to forgive the heartless b4st4rd who passed it on knowing it had real problems. Let's just hope karma kicks in big time

I don’t blame you changing everything while it is out and fingers crossed it gives you years of trouble free driving. I am hoping the same it’s having new cambelt and aux belt and it’s done 76000 miles so if I can get another 3-4 years out of it I’ll be happy.
The cost of Volvo parts are expensive they don’t go wrong as often but when they do they really cost a lot.
I’ve not longed moved house and this is wiping me out too plus some, I hope karma happens to the person who passed it onto you.

That is an absolute bummer Dave, sorry to hear that, i think in your particular case you have been most unfortunate because i would say reading the forum there are many more people who have been able to fix their engine by replacing the lifters - [myself included] and i do qualify what i said to you previously in saying it's not an emergency job to get done immediately as i drove mine like that for 2 years and have read on the forum other people doing the same for more years than myself, so i think it's a big possibility that when you purchased it, it was left that long with faulty lifters that it was beyond redemption and the seller was lucky to sell it with terminal damage just in time for his own good. I don't want to beat you up about this when you've already been kicked in the balls but the thumping noise was missed on first inspection if it was noticed you could have either re-negotiated a reduced price to compensate for the works or just walked away, so it's either take someone with you on viewing a new purchase or like is said on here-do your homework to see the particular niggles of certain makes to be prepared.-by the way Mike at Huddersfield volvo breakers is worth a try for spares.

Update.

After many weeks I located and bought a second hand engine with just 72K on the clock. It took close on a week to be delivered (supposed to be 24hrs) by a specialist engine transporter... Dont ever use PalletOnline cos they are chuffin useless and sub it out to lying incompetents.

However, when my lovely mech (John) unpacked it he found that the rocker box (inlet manifold) was cracked (PalletOnline incompetence) and that it had had a new water pump.

Closer inspection saw the injectors fly out (kinda good news but suspicious) but someone had completely removed its swirl flaps! The motor and arm were still all in place! The whole EGR route is also properly choked which kinda suggests short journeys. However, all lifters seem very firm so they are not being replaced at this point.

A pal of John's (who's worked for Volvo for many many years) finally got back to him re origin of the tugboat noise. Apparently it's a well known D5 fault. Many many engines have been rebuilt under warranty due to it, but no recall was ever ordered.

Apparently what happens is that one of the pullies (cant recall which) on the cam belt fails (some plastic bit of it) so the belt jumps a tooth causing probs with lifters and rocker arms and often destroying heads - as mine was. Moral of the story, do not buy sh1te Volvo pullies...

For mine being rebuilt, everything to do with the cam belt is being renewed but I'll be going aftermarket for the troublesome pully. Why would you pay top price for problem components?

As everything else is being transferred from my old engine we should be ok but I'll keep everyone updated

Dear all, I've been reading this post with interest as i have the tug boat noise on my 2006 V70 D5. Just to clarify and hopefully not too silly a question, but when you talk about hydraulic lifters do you mean the Tappets???
Looked in Vida and my tappet part number is 31251885 which are on AutoDoc site for £12.02 each made by INA. Is this the part to replace to solve the noise.
