Default PAS Fluid Type (Mis)information!

Hi Chaps,

I've got a new PAS fluid reservoir to replace the leaky one (at the seam) on my 2000MY C70.

The old fluid was most decidedly red, so after checking various threads on here - not to mention the owner's manual - I'll be doing a flush through with green CHF11s

It is, however, a bit disappointing to find articles like this: https://blog.fcpeuro.com/volvo-power...atf-or-chf-11s

Is the info about P80 models just plain wrong? I get the impression FCP Euro are regarded as Volvo 'specialists' - but this doesn't inspire much confidence!

It depends on the age of the car, early ones used ATF later ones CHF. I think the changeover date was around 1999.

Yep, upto around the year '99/2000, not sure of the exact changeover date but it'll likely differ according to model.

If you check the original owners manuals, they state the PAS fluid required. My '98 S70 takes ATF Dexron II or later (I use Dexron III), as has all the other Volvos that I've owned (which coincidentally have all been pre-2000 lol).

As I understand it:

If the reservoir is on the engine (sat above the alternator) it's the red dextron ii, or later equivalent.

If the reservoir is on the wing (next to the coolant tank) then it takes the green stuff.

IIRC the colour underneath of the cap corresponds to the colour of the fluid...

Which is great until someone in last 20 years replaces a leaking seal for one of a different colour.

This ^^^^^ is generally the more reliable differentiator.
