Peterborough is a boil on the backside of East Anglia - not quite East Anglia and not quite the East Midlands either - sort of "nomansland" adopted by Polish immigrants (and others) as home.

It has one point in its favour from my point of view and that the BL/BMC National Rally/Show/Spares Day Venue in early August each year.

At least I have received confirmation this pm that it has allegedly been dispatched from the 'wastelands' !!

What you needed was my Father's old Marina 1.8 TC. Nice engine with twin SU's as fitted to the MG B ... but the underside ... oh, nightmare. It sat in my yard for some years until it was unceremoniously dragged out on to a tow truck. All I had left was about a ton of body filler/fibreglass patches.

Hopefully, my next post on this thread will be some pics of the formal unscrewing of the Nivomat bottom bushing, replacement of the gaiter/s and fresh paint on the tarted up metal of the Nivos.

Always had a soft spot for the Marina TC (and i don't mean Clenchwarton Marsh!) in particular the way they always managed a nasal-sounding snort through the exhaust that the MGB didn't quite manage.

Sounds like you had to sweep yours up though!

Looking forward t the pics of these soft jaws in action!

One Nivo bottom bushing now successfully unscrewed, but had to give up with the TPU jaws that came today. I have to say that they are excellent and will be very useful, but neither they nor my vice were up to the turning forces needed for this job! Thank goodness I have a near neighbour who has a workshop that anybody other than a F1 team would be jealous of!

I will put up a final post when all is finished.

The rumours are true then - the F1 McLaren Team have moved to the south coast, Woking to be exact!

Have you given the end of the shock a good soak in WMP and then tried shocking it free Bob?

Admittedly on re-reading that Matthews site link it says he used a press. I thought this might just be a US/British language difference. Perhaps he meant a 12 ton machine press.

Same here - i assumed it was American terminology for a high pressure vice (or as they normally call them, a "vise") but a 12 ton press acting on those V-Block soft-jaws would be the same as a normal vice on the soft-jaws.

I think the trick will be shocking the end free after soaking in WMP to make sure it has a good chance of moving.

I think that several F1 Teams have their base near here although I have long lost interest in F1. It seems to me to now be a mundane hi-tech traipse around a wobbly race track for which over paid robots make far to much money with, in the main, the winner relying on team dictated pit stops.

I tried to make up some WMD, but found I couldn't focus on the job in hand, and then I woke up 30 mins later on the garage floor

Now the method has been proved just got to get the other Nivo piston in the aluminum insert jaws of a Record vice about three times the size of mine and apply a little pressure with a 3 ft adjustable spanner
